The varsity basketball programs from Beggs and Henryetta met Saturday afternoon at the Henryetta Event Center for a pair of county contests.
The visiting Beggs Demons and Lady Demons walked away from Saturday’s county meeting with wins in both contests, beginning with the Lady Demons taking the opening game by a 59-41 margin. The Demons completed the road sweep with a 5850 decision in the nightcap.
Saturday’s county battle was originally scheduled to take place January 16 in Beggs, but the contest pushed back due to inclement weather and the location moved to Henryetta due to the water issues in Beggs all last week.
Saturday’s meeting between the two county cage programs was also the first of two showdowns in a 10-day span with the other contest scheduled for next Tuesday in Beggs. It was also the first of five-straight games against county foes for Henryetta in a 10-day span, which included Tuesday’s road game at Preston and will also feature a home game Friday against Morris and a road game Saturday at Okmulgee.
Beggs was back in action Tuesday at Kellyville and will return home Friday for a county showdown with Preston.
In Saturday’s girls county battle in Henryetta, the Lady Demons led 17-9 after one and 30-19 at halftime. The host Lady Knights came out of the third quarter with an 18-14 advantage to make it a 44-37 Beggs lead with eight minutes remaining in regulation.
Henryetta’s second-half comeback was thwarted in the final frame, as the Lady Knights were outscored 15-4 in the period to award the visiting Beggs ladies the 59-41 decision.
The Lady Demons were led offensively by Rylee Youngblood, who finished with a game-high – and season- high – 42-point performance. Other Beggs scorers in Saturday’s county battle were Destiny Clay with six, Tessa Christy five, Bleu Hall four, and Kaley Collins two.
The duo of Kassidy Lee and McKayla Greenhaw were tops offensively for the Lady Knights with nine points apiece. Other Henryeta scorers on Saturday were Raychel Morrison with eight, Maddie Rock seven, Allie Davis six, and Zoe Boatright two.
In Saturday’s boys county meeting, the Knights took the opening frame by a 20-12 margin, while Beggs came out of the second stanza with a 12-9 advantage to cut Henryetta’s lead to five, 29-24, at the intermission.
The Demons made it a 2-point Knight advantage – 43-41 – with eight minutes remaining in regulation after outscoring their county rivals 17-14 in the third period.
The Beggs gentlemen put the finishing touches on the rally with a 17-7 margin in the final quarter, walking off the Henryetta Event Center floor with the 58-50 victory.
The Demons’ top scorer in the contest was Jace Basquez with 17 points.
Rickey Smith (16) and Bradyen King (13) also reached double figures for Beggs in the win. Other Demon scorers against Henryetta were Jason Nethon with seven, Dakota Hudson three, and Jaxon Remington two.
The Knights were led in scoring by Skylar Greenhaw, who finished with a game-high 26 points. Talon Weaver joined Greenhaw in double-digit scoring with 15, followed by Nick Hudson with three. The trio of Hunter Gobin, Jacob Nail, and Will Perez rounded out the Henryetta scoring in Saturday’s county contest with two points apiece.
