Community help needed after flooding devastates Dunbar Activity Center
By Patrick Ford Editor

The recent ice and snow storm that swept across Okmulgee left more than icy roads and frigid temperatures in its wake. It also caused significant damage to a community hub, the Dunbar Activity Center. The organization is now seeking the public’s help to restore a facility that has long served as a beacon of support, outreach and opportunity for residents across the area.

During the storm, a water pipe burst inside the facility, causing extensive flooding throughout the building. In addition to interior damage, the HAVOC units located on the roof were also affected, creating further repair needs that will require substantial funding and community support.

For years, the Dunbar Activity Center has served as far more than just a building. It has been a place where community members gather, celebrate milestones and find assistance during times of need. The center regularly hosts public events and provides a reasonably priced rental venue for families and organizations. Perhaps most importantly, the facility plays a vital role in helping feed free meals to individuals experiencing homelessness and food insecurity, offering hope and stability to some of the community’s most vulnerable residents.

Leaders with the Dunbar All-School Association, which oversees the facility, say the damage threatens to interrupt many of the programs and services residents depend upon. They are now asking the community to rally together to help restore the center and ensure it remains available for future generations.

Community members who wish to assist with repair efforts can make financial contributions by mailing donations to: Dunbar All-School Association P.O. Box 1604 Okmulgee, OK 74447 Individuals seeking additional information or wishing to discuss ways to help can also contact Carol Smith at 918-758-6947.

Supporters emphasize that every donation – large or small – will help move the restoration process forward and preserve a cornerstone of community service and heritage in Okmulgee. Beyond monetary contributions, residents are encouraged to share information about the need, help spread awareness and continue supporting the center’s mission.

The Dunbar Activity Center has long stood as a symbol of unity, resilience and service. Now, organizers hope that same community spirit will shine once again as Okmulgee comes together to help rebuild a place that has given so much to so many.
