A Tribal Citizens Committee made up of elders, former elected officials, attorneys and concerned citizens has announced the organization of a Tribal Listening Conference in response to the recent ruling by the Muscogee Nation Supreme Court regarding citizenship. The decision has generated widespread concern, with many referring to the situation as a potential constitutional crisis.
The Listening Conference will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Mvskoke Dome on the Claude Cox Omniplex campus in Okmulgee.
According to a spokesperson for the committee,
SEE LISTENING CONFERENCE, PAGE A6 “We’ve heard from citizens across the reservation expressing deep concerns about the implications of this ruling. The Listening Conference is intended to provide a space for respectful dialogue and information-sharing. This is not a political rally or debate, but a time to learn.”
The evening will include:
• Presentations on the 1979 Muscogee (Creek) Nation Constitution • Discussion of Principal Chief Hill’s Executive Order
• Remarks from tribal historians, former elected officials, elders and former long-serving employees Tribal citizens in attendance will be able to ask questions during designated segments. However, to maintain a productive and respectful environment, no negative or hostile debates will be permitted.
Organizers emphasized that the Committee is not affiliated with current elected tribal officials or any branch of the Muscogee government.
For the safety of all attendees – especially in light of a recent tragedy – strict security measures will be in place. Attendees will be required to pass through a metal detector at entry and must sign in and present their tribal identification at a check-in table.
