Last Friday evening, Okmulgee residents gathered in faith and solidarity for a community prayer walk aimed at confronting violence and bringing prayerful support to local neighborhoods.
The walk began at the corner of U.S. Highway 75 and Martin Luther King Avenue and continued to Conversion Ministries Church. Along the way, participants prayed, sang, and sought peace for the community, while those unable to walk joined in prayer inside the church.
Organizers said the location of the walk was chosen because of recurring challenges in the area, making it a meaningful place to unite in prayer. Local ministers took part in leading the event, emphasizing the impor- tance of faith, unity, and community action.
The effort was supported by both the Okmulgee Police Department and Light Horse Police, who ensured participants’ safety by monitoring intersections along the route. Miami Terrace Nursing Facility also provided water for participants, helping to make the event welcoming and accessible.
For nearly a decade, similar prayer efforts have been held across schools in the county, credited with fostering peace and protection for students. Organizers hope this same spirit can be extended to neighborhoods citywide.
The event was not about race or denomination but about coming together as one community. Organizers expressed their gratitude to everyone who participated, as well as to law enforcement and local supporters who made the walk possible.
