Governor Kevin Stitt has called for a Special Filing Period and Special Election to fill the Senate District 8 position.
Senator Roger Thompson recently announced his resignation, effective Nov. 1, from the state position.
Declarations for state office are filed with the State Election Board during the filing period from Jan.
6-8, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Special Primary would be held March 4, 2025; Special General Election on May 13, 2025; and if necessary, a Special Runoff Primary on April 1, 2025.
Several citizens from around the area have declared an interest in running for the seat.
Here is the proclamation released by Gov. Stitt:
AMENDED EXECUTIVE PROCLAMATION I, J. Kevin Stitt, Governor of the State of Oklahoma, pursuant to the authority vested in me by 26 O.S. § 12-119, and pursuant to my constitutional obligation to cause the laws of the State to be faithfully executed, hereby order that a Special Election be held to fill an impending vacancy in the office of District 8 of the Oklahoma Senate, due to the irrevocable resignation of Roger Thompson set to become effective on November 1, 2024.
The candidate Filing Period for the Special Election shall be Monday, January 6, Tuesday, January 7, and Wednesday, January 8, 2025; the Special Primary Election shall be held Tuesday, March 4, 2025; and the Special General Election shall be held Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Any Special Runoff Primary Election, if necessary, shall be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
The Secretary of the State Election Board and the Secretary of the appropriate county election board are hereby directed to take all actions necessary to conduct this election. Copies of this Executive Proclamation shall be distributed to them.
