On Oct. 17, credit union members around the world celebrated International Credit Union Day, an annual event to commemorate the credit union movement’s impact and achievements. This year marked the 76th anniversary of this annual event, which was celebrated under the theme of “One World Through Cooperative Finance.” In honor of this special day, First Family invited its members and the public to all locations for sweet treats and 2025 Calendars.
Credit unions are not-forprofit financial cooperatives that provide an effective and viable alternative to for-profit financial institutions for more than 403 million members in 98 countries worldwide. More than 82,000 credit unions exist globally, providing a plethora of financial services for their members, recognized as a force for positive economic and social change. First Family offers its members six locations currently, with a new location nearly built in Atoka and an ITM being built in Okemah. First Family’s member region covers 10 counties. If you live, work, or attend school in one of those 10 counties, you can be a member.
Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. Each year, the international event affords the opportunity to remember credit unions’ proud history and promote awareness of and support for the credit union and financial cooperative difference.
There are still 1.4 billion people across the globe who are unbanked. Credit unions truly have the perfect business model to serve underserved populations and that is the message we hope to always promote.
On Oct. 17, credit unions from around the world joined forces to celebrate the day with membership drives, contests and fundraisers to help their local communities. In addition to the sweet treats and calendars at all locations, the First Family FCU Okmulgee branch had some Chili Fest winnings they wanted to donate to different organizations around town. Collectively they chose VFW 1189, Okmulgee County Humane Society and the Okmulgee County Homeless Shelter.
