A Critical Renewal for Henryetta’s Future

Henryetta is set to vote on a crucial sales tax renewal on June 18, a decision that city officials, including Mayor Michael Dickey and City Manager David Bullard emphasize as essential for maintaining and improving local infrastructure and services. This renewal is not an introduction of a new tax but a continuation of the existing one, which brings in approximately $75,000 monthly to the city.

— Details of the Proposed Election The resolution authorizes the calling of a special election to be held on June 18, 2024. The purpose of this election is to allow registered qualified voters in Henryetta to vote on the proposed amendment outlined in Ordinance No. 1306.

The proposition to be voted upon concerns the extension of the termination date of a one percent (1%) excise tax levied under Ordinance No. 966. If approved, this amendment will extend the termination date from September 30, 2024, to September 30, 2034.

Voters will have the option to vote “Yes” or “No” on the proposition, indicating their approval or rejection of the proposed amendment.

The provisions of Ordinance No. 1306 are set to become effective on July 1, 2024, subject to approval by a majority of the qualified electors of the City of Henryetta.

— The Breakdown of the Sales Tax Mayor Michael Dickey explained the allocation of the sales tax revenue: “Half a cent goes into our general fund, which pays for salaries and supplies. A third goes to restricted funds … for loan payments and projects like street paving, and the final third supports infrastructure enhancements.” This funding structure ensures a balanced approach to addressing immediate operational needs and long-term development projects.

The sales tax is integral to the city’s budget, significantly impacting various sectors. For the city, it is imperative that this sales tax gets approved. One of the major points of contention among residents has been the condition of the city streets. Dickey acknowledged this concern, noting that the proposed budget includes $350,000 allocated for street paving, translating to about seven city blocks, given the high costs involved. Additionally, the city regularly applies for grants, aiming to secure REAP grants up to $100,000 to further support these efforts.

In the broader scope, the city is also focusing on critical infrastructure repairs. Several ongoing projects and potential loan forgiveness programs could free up funds for further improvements.

The city has been successful in attracting new businesses, including notable investments from companies like Casey’s and QuikTrip, which bring additional revenue and employment opportunities. The influx helps maintain and expand services.

City officials and community leaders are urging residents to vote in favor of the sales tax renewal. Early voting will be available at the county election board, and absentee ballots can be requested in the week leading up to the vote. The deadline is June 3rd. Residents are encouraged to participate in this critical decision for Henryetta’s future.

The outcome of the June 18 vote will determine whether Henryetta can sustain its current momentum and continue to address the pressing needs of its infrastructure and community services.
