Terry Joe Hurd

January 25, 1956 – October 23, 2023

Terry Joe Hurd passed in Austin, Texas on October 23, 2023, the way he often was in life: a calm presence surrounded by many loved ones.

Terry was born January 25, 1956, and graduated from Okmulgee High School. He studied electronics at Oklahoma State University – Okmulgee and architecture at the University of Oklahoma, learning skills he used throughout his lifetime. He could repair any vehicle, fix any issue at home, and loved building model airplanes in his garage workshop. Professionally, Terry had a successful career in both code enforcement and building inspection in Oklahoma and Texas. Although he proclaimed to hate being “the boss” of others, he won the Supervisor of the Year award from the City of Austin. This came as no surprise to his family because whether at work or at home, Terry was positive and authentic, harbored a strong desire to make the people around him happy, and treated others how he would want to be treated. He also brought these qualities to his 18-year marriage to Dana Hurd.

Terry loved animals and cared for many during his life. Although he was a shooting/ target practice hobbyist, he refused to hunt. Instead, he took in animals of all kinds, loved them like family, gave them the best snuggles, and consistently cared for and inquired about his furry grandchildren.

Terry enjoyed lake activities, frequently camping and swimming with his family, friends and puppy by his side. He loved a good jam session on his guitar and rocking out to live music. A spiritual person with strong faith, Terry could often be found having philosophical conversations with family or friends and was interested in studying humanity, history and religion.

Terry was preceded in death by his mother, Kay Fleming; his father, Bob Hurd; and his grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Dana Hurd and their dog, Nutmeg; his children, Micah Hurd (Meredith) and Christina Hurd (Sharod); his stepfather, Jack Fleming; his sister, Gwen Harned (Calvin); his stepchildren, Kayla Kelly (Joshua) and Kelsi Carrick; his grandchildren, Alexia, Emerie and Alma; his sister-in-law, Amy Dach; and his niece, Kathryn Dach.
