Playoffs begin Saturday for three county youth football teams
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

Three Okmulgee County youth football teams will begin their postseason journey this Saturday.

The Dewar Dragon 5/6 grade team will battle the Depew Hornets in one of two Oklahoma 8-Man Youth Football League semifinals games Saturday at Weleetka High School. The Dragons finished the 2023 campaign with a spotless 6-0 season record, 5-0 in the South Division, outscoring opponents 191-20 in six contests. Depew finished second in the North Division with a 4-2 season record, 4-1 in the North Division and outscored opponents 180-90 in six games.

A win Saturday over Depew will put the Lil Dragons into the Oklahoma 8-Man Youth Football League championship game next Saturday at Yale High School.

The Beggs and Morris youth football teams will be represented at Saturday’s opening- round schedule in the Central Football League postseason with Beggs serving as one of two playoff host sites in both 3/4 grade and 5/6 grade divisions.

Both county teams will compete in the 1/2 grade postseason with the Lil Demons going to Stroud for a 4:30 p.m. showdown with Victory Christian, while the Lil Eagles will travel to Tulsa to compete in a 5 p.m. firstround meeting with NOAH, who will serve as the other playoff site host in the 1/2 grade division.

Beggs finished as the third seed in the 1/2 grade Southwest Division with a 4-1 division record and 5-3 overall, while Morris finished as the fourth seed in the 1/2 grade Southwest Division with a 2-3 division record and 4-4 overall.

The Beggs 3/4 grade squad will be the top seed in the Southwest Division after finishing with an unblemished division record of 5-0 and 8-0 overall and will host Victory Christian, who finished fourth overall in the Northeast Division, Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The other first-round game at Beggs in the 3/4 grade division Saturday will pit Regent Prep against Kellyville at 3 p.m.

The Morris and Beggs 5/6 grade teams will open postseason play Saturday in Beggs with the Lil Demons, who finished with a perfect 5-0 division record and 8-0 overall, battling Chouteau, who finished fourth in the Northeast Division, at 7:30 p.m., while the Lil Eagles, who finished third in the Southwest Divi- sion with a 3-2 division record and 3-5 overall, will begin postseason play Saturday at 6 p.m. against NOAH, who finished second in the Northeast Division.

First-round wins for Morris and Beggs on Saturday will put the county youth gridiron squads into next Saturday’s semifinal round at a site to be determined, while losses on Saturday will bring a close to their 2023 seasons.

The CFL championship games are scheduled to take place November 4 at a site to be determined.
