Karri Carter and Mick Dodson from the Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspection office were at Tuesday’s county commissioner meeting to address the apportionment error during their audit of the 2019-20 fiscal year.
Carter said that in 2019, the fire department received $38,900 less, and those funds were appropriated to the building authority, county road fund and sheriff ’s fund. That amount went up to $46,731 less in 2020.
Commissioner Erik Zoellner expressed an in- terest in “replenishing” the funds.
“I make a motion that we make whole the fire tax funds, based on the auditor’s statement,” he said. Commissioner David Walker voiced his support for this action, saying “If the calculation is all right, I feel comfortable in that we ought to make them whole.”
Asst. D.A. Carman Rainbolt told them that this had already been done, which led to the September 2022 letter requiring a fire board to be assembled and having that board provide a formal request for disbursement. “You can make the motion, but you’re simply doing something that’s already been done,” he said.
Following several minutes of discussion, the commissioners voted to apportion the funds back but did not specify how or when this would occur.
