‘Big Brain Trivia’ returns Sept. 23
By PATRICK FORD NEWS EDITOR

Teams sought for Main Street fundraiser

There are a few spots remaining for those wishing to participate in Okmulgee Main Street’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Big Brain Trivia.

Main Street Director Heather Sumner is excited for the return of the event, which not only tests the ‘brains’ of the teams with a wide array of trivia questions, but joins the community together for an evening of fun and socializing.

This year, Big Brain is coming a little bit later – Sept. 23 – to the State Room on the campus of OSUIT. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the competition beginning at 6 p.m. Sumner stated there are 25 (tables) spots available, with 13 already reserved. The cost is $400 for a regular table with a maximum of eight people. A corporate table is $500 (8), and that gives each participant a drink ticket, 40 of the 50/50 raffle tickets and two mulligans.

“This is a major fundraiser event for Main Street,” Sumner said, “However, there are limited tables available and there will be no tickets sold at the door.”

For more information, contact the Okmulgee Main Street Office at 918-7581015.

Trophies will be awarded for Best Table Theme and Team Academic Bowl Champions.

There will be a buffet of heavy hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, a complimentary candy bar, along with a vocal and silent auction. Wine and beer will be provided by Tavern 56.

At Big Brain Trivia, each table or team gets to choose their own theme, and then bring items to decorate their table. Many dress in costume, and bring items that can be raffled off, with all proceeds going to Main Street.

— What to Expect the Night of the Event The Big Brain Trivia Night is being held at OSUIT’s State Room. Doors will open at 5 p.m. There will be one hour to decorate tables, socialize, bid on the silent auction items and enjoy the bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres.

You will be seated as a team and will compete as a team. Teams are limited to no more than eight people but if you have fewer people it is not a problem. There will be five rounds of questions with approximately ten questions per round. Paper and pencil will be provided and it is recommended that you designate one team member as a “scribe.”

The host will read the question and it will be shown on the overhead. You will have time to write the answer on your answer sheet. However, it is suggested that the scribe write down each question. At the end of the round you will have time to reconsider your answers or answer any questions you were not able to answer during the round. Your answer sheets will be picked up and scored at the end of each round. The correct answers will be given after all answer sheets are gathered.

At no point will team answers be read aloud or shared with other competitors! Team standings will be posted at the end of each round. Electronic devices are strictly prohibited and cheaters will be dealt with severely (team will be disqualified)! Please note that “mulligans” will be available the night of the event. You are limited to two mulligans per table and they must be purchased prior to the beginning of the second round! The purchased mulligans may be used on any question, it will be counted as “correct.” The cost of each mulligan is $30. The winner of this portion of the competition will be presented the traveling Big Brain Trivia trophy at the end of the evening.

“Finally, please remember that this is a fundraiser … and it’s going to be fun!,” Sumner said. “For those of you who suffer from “test anxiety,” relax. This is not a test. And unlike any test I’ve ever taken, you will have seven fellow brains helping you out!

“Thank you for choosing to be a part of this event and for supporting the Okmulgee Main Street program.”
