YMCA hosting Thunder camp

Community open house is Saturday

The Okmulgee County Family YMCA will be a busy place this week, with a basketball camp and community open house planned.

On Thursday, the Oklahoma City Thunder will hold a basketball camp for kids ages 6-14. According to Y Director Katie McElhaney, setup begins at 6 a.m. and registration starts at 7:30 a.m. for Session 1. The first session, for ages 6-9, is from 8-11 a.m.

Session 2 will be from 12-3 p.m. and is for ages 10-14.

The maximum number of campers for each session will be 70 kids, for a total of 140.

The cost for the camp is $65, and includes a basketball, T-shirt, Simple Modern water bottle, and a ticket to a 2023-24 Thunder game.

Thunder Youth Basketball camps, presented by Simple Modern, focus on instilling basketball and sportsmanship fundamentals such as teamwork, self-confidence, hard work, focus, and persistence.

— Free Community Open House Saturday The YMCA will hold an open house day on Saturday, July 22. According to McElhaney, there will be several family friendly activities going on this day.

“We are also waiving all joining fees this day if anyone does decide to join, a savings of $60,” she said.

Almost everything at the YMCA is free that day, she added, however that does not include the public pool. Hours for the public are from 12-6 p.m. Non-members will still need to pay $5 for use of the pool.

There will be a new release of the Y’s signature program, and members are urged to bring a friend.
