Veronica Ann Lewis
Veronica Ann Lewis, age 66, was born Friday, September 25, 1953, in Okmulgee, at 12:30 a.m. She was the oldest of five children born to Violetta and John Nunley. Surrounded by her husband, children, family and friends, Veronica made a peaceful transition from this life to be with the Lord on January 1, 2020.
Veronica attended grade school at Attucks Elementary School, middle school at Historic Dunbar and graduated from Okmulgee High School with the class of 1972. She went on to graduate from Langston University with a major in Sociology and Bachelor of Science Degree in 1976.
Veronica met the love of her life, George Lewis in 1975. They were united in Holy Matrimony on May 6, 1989, in Okmulgee. To this union, Tamiya Lewis and George Lewis, II, was born.
Veronica worked in the social services arena for 27 years. She also was employed at Ball Brothers Glass Plant, Anne Maroney, Creoks Behavioral Health, Morning Star Mental Health, and Lakewood Care Center. She retired from Okmulgee Primary School in 2014.
Veronica loved to sing, and she became active in the Okmulgee Community Choir, Norma Noble Workshop Choir, and Voices of Zion Singing Group. Because of her love of music and singing, Veronica had several favorite songs that she loved to sing in the Choir. “Great Is thy Faithfulness” and “The Lord will make a way somehow.”
Veronica accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Eastside Baptist Church in Okmulgee. She served dutifully in the youth choir, senior choir and as a deaconess.
Veronica later united with St Matthews Missionary Baptist Church in 2002, where Rev. McKinley Rice is the Pastor. She was active in the Mass Choir, served as a Deaconess and was on the Praise Team until her health no longer permitted.
Veronica was preceded in death by her loving parents John and Violetta Nunley; paternal and maternal grandparents, her nephew Johnathan Alan Nunley.
She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted husband of 30 years, George Lewis, of the home in Okmulgee; two children, Tamiya Lewis of Okmulgee and George Lewis, ll (Tiffany) of Tulsa; four siblings, Bryan Nunley of Okmulgee, Clyde Nunley (Juanita) of Okmulgee, Alan Nunley (Jacqueline) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Tonya James (Rick) of Carrollton, Texas; six grandchildren, Jeremiah Richardson, George Lewis, III, Daniel Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Marissa Lewis, Asa Lewis; and a host of nieces and nephews; friends; and family.
You may visit Mrs. Lewis on Friday, January 10, 2020, from 1-6 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace of the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc., in Okmulgee. Her sacred farewell ceremony will commence on Saturday, January 11, 2020, at 11 a.m. in the most holy sanctuary of St. Matthew’s Baptist Church. Her Pastor, Reverend McKinley Rice, will preside.
The Christian Committal and interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Okmulgee under the direction of the Keith D. Biglow Funeral Directors, Inc. Okmulgee.
