Cyclist killed in hit-and-run incident
An Okmulgee man is dead after he was hit while riding his bicycle.
According to Okmulgee Police Chief Joe Prentice, at 8:34 p.m. Wednesday, the department responded to a report of a hit-and-run collision at the intersection of Kennedy and Osage Streets.
On arriving at the scene, officers discovered John Perryman, 60, of Okmulgee lying in the roadway, who had been struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle. The driver of the vehicle left the scene, according to the chief. The victim was transported to the Muscogee Creek Nation Medical Center where he was pronounced dead around 9:08 p.m.
At around 11:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to a local apartment complex to make contact with the driver of the hit-and run-vehicle.
“It appears the driver, a 17-year-old female, told relatives about the collision and one of them contacted police dispatch,” Prentice said. “After collecting evidence and conducting an interview with the driver, she was taken into custody.”
The driver is being held in a juvenile detention center on several complaints, including Manslaughter.
The investigation is continuing, the chief stated.
