Fishing derby planned for Saturday

CJ's Crossroads  and VJW Endearvors aresponsoring a Catfish Derby on this Saturday, May 19. The sign-in will be from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. at 6th and Oklahoma. Entry fee is $10 for those wishing to participate.

This event is being held to help promote fishing in local lakes and waterways and summer outdoor activities here in Okmulgee County, according to the promoters of the derby. There has been lots of interest in this event since it was announced.

The prize for first place is $100 cash for the top weigh-in of the three biggest catch of the day. Fish must be rod and reel caught only and  hook must be presented to count for weigh in. Weigh-in will begin at 6 p.m. 

After the weigh-in begins, the promoters will hold a fish fry, including catfish and hushpuppies.  A portion of the funds generated from entry fees and fish fry sales will be donated to a local non-profit group. 

All participants must have a valid Oklahoma fishing license. 

The catfish derby will be a first in many of fishing derbies that will be promoted this year. The next derby  will be one for the youth of Okmulgee County in July. 

CJ’s Crossroads is hoping for lots of good weather, great catches and possibly even a new state record.
