Okmulgee’s downtown coffee shop, LOKal, has reopened for business under new ownership. The shop will also feature new menu items according to the owners.

During Wednesday’s Talk Local, the new owners shared some insight into what’s on the horizon.

“We couldn’t let something like this shut down in Okmulgee,” new co-owner Chandler Torbett said. “We are doing so well with everything that’s happening and all the great work that’s being done, we couldn’t just sit and let it go without trying.”

Joining him in this venture are MacKenzie Coplen along with Richard and Crystal Larabee.

As Larabee talked with previous owner Scott Condict, he grew excited about taking a risk with the business, but is looking forward to making the shop a destination in Okmulgee.

“We are going to scale back and keep the atmosphere and focus on the coffee,” Richard Larabee said. “We want this a coffee shop that you can come and hang out at.”

During breakfast, LOKal will feature bagels, muffins and yogurt parfaits.

On the lunch menu, soups, salads, and sandwiches will be the main star, but will be light, fresh and healthy, said Larabee.

The owners also highlighted several sandwiches including the 6th Street Sandwich comprised of  turkey, lettuce, tomato and avocado, while the Hwy. 56 Sandwich will feature ham, lettuce, tomato and avocado.

The shop will also showcase a different soup-of-the-day, with owners already singing the praise of the chicken tortilla soup and the red pepper Gouda soup.

“We would love to hear feedback from the public,” the staff said.

Though the business will not be open in the evenings, LOKal plans on having special offerings such as movie, trivia or karaoke night.

The shop hours are  Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Here is a list of daily specials:

Motivational Mondays - Free extra shot in coffee

Tuesdays - 1/2 price coffee

Wednesday - Donut Bar

Thursday - Bread Bowl Soup Day

Friday - Fresh Baked Cookies

Saturday - Biscuit and Gravy Bar

The LOKal also welcomes civic groups that would like to try a new venue for their meetings.

LOKal is located at 212 E. 6th Street and the number is 918-938-0600. OSUIT Culinary Arts major McKenna Phillips will be heading up the kitchen.
