Knights split recent road action

The Henryetta Golden Knights journeyed on a 2-game road trip last weekend to close out a busy week of basketball action.

The first stop on the road trip was in Stigler last Thursday against the Stigler Panthers. The second stop on the 2-game road trip was in Eufaula last Friday, taking on the host Eufaula Ironheads.

The Knights earned their third win of the 2017-18 campaign last Thursday with a 55-45 victory over Stigler, splitting the season series with the Panthers.

The winning streak was short-lived, however, as the Henryetta gentlemen come up on the short end of a 46-36 decision to the Eufaula Ironheads, dropping the season series to the Eufaula squad.

The Knights were back in action on Tuesday with a home game against the Kellyville Ponies. Following the home battle with Kellyville, the Henryetta gentlemen will travel to Beggs on Friday to complete the season series with the Beggs Golden Demons, then will travel to Oktaha on Monday for a meeting with the Oktaha Tigers. The Henryetta gentlemen will close out their regular-season schedule next Tuesday at home against their arch rivals, the Morris Eagles.

The remaining three regular-season contests will tip off at approximately 8 p.m.

In last Thursday's road game at Stigler, the Knights trailed 13-12 after one quarter of action. The Henryetta gentlemen knotted the score at 30-30 at halftime after outscoring the host Panthers 18-17 in the second period. The Knights came out of the third quarter with a 13-8 advantage to go into the final eight minutes of regulation with a 5-point lead, 43-38.

The Henryetta cage squad completed the 10-point win by outscoring Stigler 12-7 in the final frame to walk off the SHS gym floor on the winning end of a 55-45 decision.

Three Henryetta players found their way into double-digit scoring in the contest, led by Drew Brown with 16 points. Other double-figure scorers for Henryetta were Pepper Logan with 15 and Daniel Bear with 11. The rest of the Knight scoring came on seven points by Colten Wion, five points by Avery Moore, and one point by Jarett Day.

Stigler's top scorer was Caleb Humphries with a game-high 19 points. Nathanial Shaffer also reached double figures for the host Panthers, finishing with 13 points.

In Friday's road trip to Eufaula, the Knights were outscored 11-7 in the opening frame then took the second stanza by a 14-11 margin to trail by one, 22-21, at the halftime break. Eufaula came out of the third period with an 11-7 advantage to push its lead to five, 33-28, then outscored the Knights 13-8 in the final frame to hand the Henryetta gentlemen the 46-36 setback.

The Knights did not have any double-digit scorers in the loss to Eufaula with the top scorers being Pepper Logan and Colten Wion with nine points each. Daniel Bear was next for HHS with seven, followed by Drew Brown with six, and Avery Moore with five.

The host Ironheads were led by John Bailey with 14, followed by Kobe Warrior with 13.
