Beggs sweeps Morris in county battle

MORRIS - The Beggs varsity basketball teams took the season series from the host Morris Eagles and Lady Eagles this past Friday evening at the Don Shoemake Sports Complex.

The Lady Demons (12-6) began the county contest with a 51-18 victory over the host Lady Eagles (11-9). The Demons (13-6) completed the sweep with a 69-48 decision over the Eagles (10-10) in the nightcap.

The Beggs squads took the first meeting this season by margins of 51-40 and 74-46, respectively, on January 9 in Beggs.

Beggs returned to action on Monday with a road trip to Preston for a county showdown with the Preston Pirates and Lady Pirates. The Beggs squads were also on the road on Tuesday with a trip to Haskell for a battle with the Haskell Haymakers and Lady Haymakers.

The Demons and Lady Demons will be at home on Friday for a county meeting with the Henryetta Golden Knights and Lady Knights to begin a 3-game homestand. The homestand will continue Saturday against Sperry and will conclude next Tuesday against Kellyville.

All three home games are scheduled to begin with girls action at 6 p.m. followed by the boys contest at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Morris was back in action on Tuesday, playing host to the Eufaula Ironheads and Lady Ironheads. The Morris squad will be on the road Friday at Haskell then will close out the regular season next Tuesday in Henryetta against the Henryetta Golden Knights and Lady Knights. The final two regular-season games for the Eagles and Lady Eagles in Haskell and Henryetta are scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. with the girls game followed by the boys contest at approximately 8 p.m.

In last Friday's girls contest, both teams struggled offensively in the opening period with Beggs coming out of the frame with a narrow 7-4 advantage.

The Lady Demons increased their lead to 25-10 at halftime after outscoring the host Lady Eagles 18-6 in the second stanza.

The Beggs ladies pushed their lead to 39-12 with eight minutes remaining in regulation after coming out of the third quarter with a 14-2 margin.

The Lady Demons closed out the double-digit win and the season series sweep by doubling up the Lady Eagles 12-6 in the final frame to walk off the Morris gym floor with the 51-18 decision.

Trinity Phillips led the balanced offensive attack for the Beggs ladies, finishing with a game-high 12 points. Chiawna Johnson also found her way into double-digit scoring with 10 points. Moyia Phillips just missed out on double figures for Beggs, finishing with nine points. Other Beggs scorers in the county contest were Kaitlin Couch with six, Cheyenne Johnson five, Emiko Goudeau four, and Devon Hightower and Chyniqua Johnson two each.

Morris' top scorer was Charie Barnett with six, followed by Abigail Force and Natalie Parker with four each. Treysa Clay and Kaylee Pinkston rounded out the scoring for the Lady Eagles with two points apiece.

In the boys contest last Friday, the Demons came out of the opening period with an 18-11 advantage, then outscored the Eagles 20-12 in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 38-23 lead.

The Morris squad took the third stanza by a 17-11 margin to send the county battle to the final frame with Beggs in front by nine, 49-40.

In the final eight minutes of regulation, the Eagles were unable to get any closer, as the Demons took the final frame 20-8 to walk away with the 69-48 victory.

Shaidan Jordan led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Ege DeBock and E.J. Smoot were next in the scoring column for Beggs with 11 points apiece. Other Demon scorers in the county battle were Jaidan Grayson with eight, Dusty Pendergrass five, Stacy Phillips four, Mateo Sanders and Blake Gomez three each, Kendyll Daniels and Amos Gaines two apiece, and Chandler Stanton one.

Morris was led in scoring by Joe McBride with 15. Dillon Mattingly and Brett Beard also reached double figures for the host Eagles with 12 points apiece. Devin Warren was next for Morris with six points, followed by Garrett Stacy with three.
