Lighting the Path Ahead

GOPO building garners award

I know you’ve been talking about it for months. I’ve seen you driving your cars by slowly and admiring it through the windows. Very soon, you will have your chance to come inside and see it for yourself. I hope you are all making plans to attend the Grand Old Post Office - Grand Opening (GOPO – GO) in downtown Okmulgee. This public event is scheduled on Tuesday, November 28 (between 11:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.). During these hours, guests may go on self-guided tours throughout the entire facility. Several helpful guides will be stationed throughout the building to answer questions about the GOPO Student Lofts and their significance to downtown Okmulgee. No appointments are necessary. We just want anyone who wants to see it for themselves, to be able to walk through the building on 5th and Grand at their leisure. This one day event will be the general public’s only opportunity to tour this amazing renovation, because once we move OSUIT students into the building in January, it becomes their home, and access to their living spaces will be restricted. So please don’t miss it. Come out and see for yourself that Okmulgee is truly rising.

Q: I heard the GOPO recently won an award. Is this correct?

A: Yes, we already knew the Grand Old Post Office was special, but it is now an award-winning construction project. Congratulations to Oakridge Builders for winning the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Oklahoma Excellence in Construction Award for their work on the OSUIT Student Housing Complex known as the Grand Old Post Office. This coveted state-wide award was presented at a gala event held at the Cox Business Center in Tulsa on October 26. With over 500 people in attendance, Oakridge Builders received the award for the Top Institutional Project between $5 Million and $10 Million category. Sharing in this award were the architectural firms of KSQ and SAA, the OSU Long Range Facilities Planning Division, and the administration of OSUIT.

These prestigious awards are designed to recognize the “best of the best” and raise awareness about significant construction projects across the state of Oklahoma. Winners are selected by an impartial panel of judges from the construction industry. The judges evaluated entries on factors such as attractiveness of design, complexity, workmanship, innovation, and unusual challenges or problems overcome. All state winners will automatically be qualified to enter the ABC National Excellence in Construction awards program where the winning projects will be honored at the association’s National Awards celebration in March 2018.

Q: Does the mural have a name?

A: Yes, I asked Carmen Taylor to title her original work of art on the Grand Old Post Office Student Housing and she gave it a very fitting name…“Ride of Your Life.” The two-story mural features a bronc-riding cowboy through a backdrop of life-changing technical majors offered by OSUIT. A good education that leads to a rewarding career is the “Ride of Your Life.”

It’s exciting to see history being made in downtown Okmulgee. If you have additional questions or comments about the GOPO Student Housing, please forward them to osuit-president@okstate.edu
