OKMULGEE - The Okmulgee Bulldogs closed out their 2017 varsity football season this past Friday night in front of their home crowd at historic Harmon Field.

The regular-season finale did not go as planned for the Bulldogs, as the Okmulgee squad found themselves on the short end of a 43-18 outcome to the visting Bristow Purple Pirates.

The District 3A-6 loss to Bristow ends Okmulgee’s 2017 season at 4-6, 1-5 in district play.

Friday's loss to Bristow was also the final time that nine Okmulgee players suited up in a Bulldog football uniform.

The Bulldogs lost an important part of their offense on the opening series of the game, as junior wide receiver Trivion Skinner, who led the team in receiving in 2017, suffered an ankle injury on the seventh play of the game with about nine minutes left in the first quarter. Skinner hauled in a pass from QB Jacob Barrett and began to head upfield for positive yardage when the injury occurred.

Bristow got the scoring started at the 6:16 mark of the first quarter on a 21-yard pass from Tyler Wayland to Devin Reed. Carson Jackson's successful conversion run gave the visitors an early 8-0 advantage.

After a blocked punt gave Bristow the football at the Okmulgee 10 with 4:29 left in the opening frame, Wayland pushed Bristow's lead to 14-0 by scoring on a 10-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. Patrick Lupp toed the PAT kick to extend the deficit to 15-0 with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter.

Two minutes later, the Purple Pirates extended their lead to 22-0 on a 23-yard run by Jalen Fullbright and a successful extra-point try by Lupp.

The second-quarter scoring started with a 46-yard run by Wayland at the 10:19 mark. Lupp added the PAT kick to push Bristow's lead to 29-0.

The final tally of the first half came at the 2:02 mark on a 25-yard TD run by Bristow's Kyren Johnson. Lupp split the uprights with the extra-point try to send the teams to the halftime break with the Bulldogs trailing 36-0.

With 10:59 left in the third quarter, the visitors put the finishing touches on their 43-point performance, as Reed scored on a 5-yard run. Lupp once again made good on the PAT kick to extend the deficit to 43-0.

The Bulldogs broke up the shutout bid at 8:30 in the third on a 30-yard scamper by Barrett on a QB keeper. The PAT kick was blocked at the line of scrimmage to make it a 43-6 contest.

Barrett's 1-yard run at 4:59 of the fourth made it a 43-12 margin.

The final tally of 2017 for the Bulldogs came with one second left in regulation, as Alex Griffin bulled his way across the goal line on a 1-yard TD plunge to make the final outcome, 43-18, Bristow.

The Bulldogs finished with 322 yards of total offense in the regular-season finale with 290 of that yardage coming on the ground.

Barrett was the top performer in the run game for the Okmulgee with a season-best 162 yards on 16 carries and 2 TDs. Chris Wallace was next in the rushing department for the Bulldogs with 69 yards on 16 carries. Tavon Henderson had five carries for 21 yards in the regular-season finale, followed by Griffin with 17 yards on four carries and one score.

Kethan Harjo caught two passes for 19 yards in the regular-season finale, followed by Trivion Skinner with one reception for seven yards and Melic Jefferson with one catch for six yards.
