The Dewar Lady Dragons brought the heat to Henryetta’s Lady Knights Tuesday night during the season opener for both teams. Dewar’s fast pitch softball team defeated the Henryetta fast pitch team by a score of 26-11.

The Lady Dragons came roaring out of the gate in the top of the first with a bunt single from junior Savannah Been, who would go on to steal two bases that inning. However, Henryetta was quick to shut the Lady Dragons down with three consecutive outs, making the score 1-0.

Though they did not make much headway in the first inning, Dewar’s pitcher, Morgan Britt would not let Henryetta score any runs in the bottom of the first. Britt earned her first strikeout of the season, while the Lady Dragon defense prevented any hits from Henryetta’s offense from becoming runs.

The second inning earned the Lady Dragons one run off of a steal from Sophomore Noe Corbin who reached on a single, then stole her way home, earning a run for the visitors. The Lady Dragons might have only scored one run, but Britt was an impenetrable wall for the Lady Knight offense, earning herself three consecutive strikeouts.

The Lady Dragons earned a five-run lead over the Lady Knights during the third inning, obtaining three runs that included a homerun. Junior Ashton Been smacked one out of the park after her teammate, Savannah Been, earned a single. Been’s homerun provided the Lady Dragons with an even greater lead, 4-0.

Dewar would not stop at just one run. The Lady Knight pitcher, Kim Hage, gave up a run when junior KiKi Carter got up to bat. Carter then stole three bases, advancing to third, and eventually made it home after Hage walked two of her teammates, Corbin and senior Karlie Ryal.

Britt had started out strong in the beginning of the third, earning a fifth strikeout. Eventually, the Lady Knights turned the tide.

Henryetta would not take the 5-0 lead Dewar had established laying down, earning seven runs throughout the bottom of third, which put them barely in the lead by two,7-5.

The Lady Knights continued to hold back the Lady Dragons in the fourth inning. Dewar’s offense squeaked out a run in the top of the fourth, but was stopped by the Henryetta defense before making any more runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Dewar’s defense kicked in to prevent Henryetta from advancing its lead, giving away only one run, quickly bringing a close to the fourth inning. However, Henryetta still held onto its lead, 8-6.

In the fifth inning, the Lady Dragons were able to tie the Lady Knights after scoring four runs, making the score 10-10, putting both teams on equal ground.

However, it was in the sixth inning that the Lady Dragons truly turned the tide, scoring 16 runs. Both Carter and Britt earned three runs throughout the sixth inning, while Corbin, Autumn Campbell, and junior Staejha Mack each scored two. Ashton Been and Skye Been did not let their teammates have all of the fun, both earning one hit in the sixth inning.

The Lady Dragons made the Lady Knights relinquish their lead, winning the season opener 26-11.

Dewar’s fast pitch softball team was scheduled to face off against other county teams in its Dewar Softball Tournament Thursday, Aug. 10, to Saturday, Aug. 12.

Henryetta was scheduled to battle county foe, the Beggs Lady Demons, Thursday evening in Beggs.
