HENRYETTA - The countdown to Opening Nite has begun for the 2017 Henryetta Golden Knight varsity football team.

In 3 months and 6 days, the Knights will kick off their 2017 season against the Eufaula Ironheads. The season opener will take place at historic Cameron Field in Henryetta.

The August 25 opener against the Ironheads will come as part of 'Zero Week' for high school football teams.

Zero Week allows teams to play their first game of the season the last Friday of August and have an off week somewhere during the normal regular-season schedule.

On Monday, the Knights began the first part of their preseason preparations for the August 25 season opener against Eufaula with the start of a 10-day spring practice session at Cameron Field.

High school teams are allowed, for 10 days, to strap on the helmets and shoulder pads and conduct workouts in preparation for the upcoming 2017 season.

Henryetta head coach Darin Johnson and his coaching staff will use the 10-day spring practice to get players ready for the grueling 2-month preseason workout that will include a Summer Pride strength and conditioning program that will begin in June 5 and will continue through July. The first two weeks of Summer Pride are on a voluntary basis and will take place from 4-6 p.m. each day. The remainder of the Summer Pride schedule will be as follows:

June 19-23

• Varsity: 6:30-8 a.m. (Monday-Friday)

• Junior High: 8:30-10 a.m. (Monday and Tuesday)

June 26-June 30; July 10-28 (Off Week: July 3-6)

• Varsity: 6:30-8 a.m. (Monday-Thursday)

• Junior High: 8:30-10 a.m. (Monday-Thursday)

• Make-up Day: Fridays from 8:30-11 a.m.

Another workout that will help Coach Johnson and his players get ready for the 2017 season will be a 7-on-7 Passing League that will take place each Thursday in June.

The Henryetta football team will take part in its spring football drills the remainder of this week, as well as next Monday-Wednesday from 2:50-5 p.m. each day.

The spring practice will conclude next Thursday and Friday at the Kiefer Team Camp from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Kiefer High School.

On August 7, the Knights will begin preseason practices. The first four days of practice that week will be non-contact drills with players in helmets and practice jerseys only. On August 11, the Knights will strap on the shoulder pads and conduct their first full-contact practice, getting further ready for the August 25 season opener at home against Eufaula.

On August 18, the Henryetta squad will host Mounds and Liberty (Mounds) in a 3-team preseason scrimmage as a final tuneup for the season opener against Eufaula.
