Late rally spoils strong offensive night for Beggs The Beggs Junior High Lady Demons delivered an impressive performance at the plate on March 23, but came up just short in a heartbreaking 9-7 loss to Preston, decided on the final play of the game.
Despite out-hitting Preston 18-11, Beggs was unable to hold off a late surge in the bottom of the fifth inning. Entering the final frame with a 7-6 lead, the Lady Demons saw Preston rally, highlighted by a triple that tied the game and a decisive three-run double that sealed the comeback victory.
Beggs came out strong early, setting the tone in the top of the first inning. Gentry Kelley opened the scoring with an RBI single, sparking an offense that would remain consistent throughout the game. The Lady Demons extended their lead in the second inning behind a single from Paisly Kelley and a double by Anabella Cruz.
Preston responded in the bottom of the second, using a combination of timely hits to even the score. However, Beggs regained control late in the game. In the top of the fifth inning, Teegan Mills delivered a clutch double down the left field line, and Alyssa Melton followed with an RBI single to give Beggs a 7-6 advantage heading into the final half-inning.
Offensively, the Lady Demons were led by Emilee Holland, who recorded three hits. Cruz contributed two RBIs while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Melton, Saige Courtney, Mills, Paisley Williams and Kelley each added multiple hits, showcasing Beggs’ depth and consistency in the lineup.
Defensively, Beggs played a clean game, committing no errors. Williams led the team in the field with seven chances.
Holland started in the circle for Beggs, allowing 11 hits and nine runs over four and two-thirds innings.

Beggs wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Madi Jones got things started with an RBI double, followed by a two-run triple from Paisley Williams. Emilee Holland added an RBI single, while Jesselee Whitecotton brought in a run on a groundout. Saige Courtney contributed with an RBI single, and Teegan Mills capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, giving Beggs a commanding early advantage.
The Lady Demons continued to apply pressure in the third inning when Courtney delivered another RBI single to extend the lead to 7-2.
Dewar, however, refused to go away quietly. The visitors chipped away at the deficit before delivering a major blow in the fifth inning, when a three-run inside-the-park home run cut the Beggs lead to just two runs, making it a tense finish.
Holland earned the win in the circle for Beggs, pitching all five innings. She allowed three hits and five runs while striking out three and walking seven. Despite the walks, Holland managed to limit Dewar’s scoring opportunities enough to preserve the victory.
Offensively, Beggs tallied 11 hits in the game. Alyssa Melton, Courtney and Paisley Kelley each recorded two hits, while Courtney and Williams led the team with two RBIs apiece.
Defensively, the Lady Demons were flawless, not committing a single error. Melton led the team with seven defensive chances.
Dewar showed patience at the plate, drawing seven walks and turning a double play, but ultimately could not overcome Beggs’ explosive first inning.
With the win, Beggs demonstrated resilience, using a fast start and steady defense to withstand Dewar’s late push and secure the victory.
