Morris brings home medals at Mounds
By Patrick Ford Editor

Battling bitter cold temperatures and relentless winds, the Morris High School track and field teams turned in a gritty and determined performance Friday, bringing home multiple medals and key team points at the Mounds Track Meet.

Despite the challenging conditions, the Lady Eagles led the way with several standout efforts, highlighted by a dominant showing from Taylor Phillips. The Morris standout soared to a first-place finish in the long jump, posting an impressive leap of 14 feet, 6 inches – into a stiff headwind. Phillips also showcased her speed on the track, earning a runner-up finish in the 100-meter dash.

Phillips continued to play a key role in Morris’ relay success, teaming up with Tenli Barnett, Kailyn Fixico and Sutton Giddens to claim second place in the 4×200-meter relay. The quartet delivered one of the Lady Eagles’ strongest performances of the day, fighting through the wind to secure a spot on the podium.

Giddens added to the team’s point total with a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles and a sixth-place effort in the 100-meter hurdles, demonstrating versatility and endurance in two demanding events.

Distance runner Amy Gehring also contributed valuable points, placing fourth in the mile run with a strong, steady performance against tough competition.

The Lady Eagles’ 4×100-meter relay team of Kailyn Fixico, Madilyn Stacy, Phoebe Berryhill and Phillips rounded out the scoring efforts with a sixthplace finish, capping off a productive day for the Morris girls squad.

On the boys side, the Eagles showed resilience and determination throughout the meet. Elias Smith led the field events with a fifth-place finish in the shot put, battling both the elements and a competitive field.

Keith Richardson turned in a strong effort on the track, placing sixth in a fast-paced and physically demanding 400-meter dash. Richardson also contributed to the boys’ 4×100-meter relay team, joining Elijah Edwards, Gage Ausbrooks, and Isaiah Pannell to secure a sixth-place finish.

While the weather conditions tested every competitor, Morris athletes rose to the challenge, delivering a series of strong performances and setting a solid foundation as the season continues.

Next up for the teams is a trip to Okemah this Friday.
