A new chapter of family-friendly programming is beginning at the Okmulgee Public Library, and it’s designed to bring readers of all ages together in a fun, relaxed setting.
The library is launching Family Story-Time, a twice-monthly event aimed at engaging schoolaged children through middle school, while still welcoming the entire family to participate. The program will be held every first and third Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s children’s section.
Organizers say the new format goes beyond the traditional story hour, offering a more immersive reading experience that encourages kids to stay engaged over multiple sessions.
“We’ll begin each evening with a storybook to get everyone settled in,” organizers shared. “But the heart of the program will be reading from a chapter book that we can continue over the course of one to four meetings.”
The approach is designed to bridge the gap between picture books and more advanced reading, making it ideal for elementary and middle school students who are developing stronger reading skills. By following a chapter book over several sessions, children can build anticipation, improve comprehension and experience the joy of storytelling in a shared environment.
The event is intentionally family-focused, encouraging parents and siblings to attend together. Library staff hope the relaxed atmosphere will make it easy for families to connect – not only with books, but with each other.
Attendees are encouraged to dress comfortably and bring a floor pillow if they’d like, creating a cozy, informal setting for the readings. The library does note that no food or drinks will be allowed during the program.
