The Dewar Dragons put together an impressive weekend on the diamond, showcasing timely hitting, clutch pitching and resilience in pressure moments as they secured three victories over Colbert, Tupelo and Cameron.
Dewar opened the stretch with a 10-6 win over the Colbert Leopards on Friday, using a balanced offensive attack and key late-inning execution to pull away. The Dragons struck early in the top of the first inning when Stoney Yaerger doubled to center, and Tanner Wilson later scored on a tag-up to give Dewar a 2-0 advantage.
The Dragons added to their lead in the second on an RBI single from Traber Jones before Yaerger delivered again in the third with a solo home run to center field, extending the lead to 4-0. Colbert battled back to tie the game in the fourth, but Dewar responded in the fifth when Braxton Wiebe launched a go-ahead solo home run. A tagup by Vinton Goff helped create separation as the Dragons regained control. Dewar’s offense finished with 11 hits, led by Ayden Been, who drove in four runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Yaerger, Jones, Wilson and Been each collected two hits in the win. On the mound, Yaerger worked five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) while striking out seven. Jones shut the door in relief with two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out two.
The Dragons carried that momentum into a thrilling, high-scoring showdown against the Tupelo Tigers later Friday, pulling out a 14-12 victory in a back-and-forth battle.
Dewar found itself trailing 1211 in the fifth inning before delivering the decisive blow. Ayden Been came through with a clutch two-run double to swing the lead back in favor of the Dragons. The offense erupted for 15 hits in the contest, with Tanner Wilson and Stoney Yaerger leading the charge with three hits each at the top of the lineup.
The game featured multiple momentum swings. Dewar tied the game early on a home run by Traber Jones in the second inning, then reclaimed the lead in the fourth behind a sacrifice fly from Yaerger and a solo blast from Braelin Lewis. After Tupelo surged ahead with a five-run fourth inning, Dewar answered emphatically in the fifth, plating five runs on six hits, highlighted by a two-run single from Lewis.
Wilson added insurance with a solo home run in the seventh inning. Jones was dominant in relief, tossing three shutout innings without allowing a hit while striking out three to secure the win. Been, Jones and Lewis each drove in three runs in the victory.
The Dragons closed out their strong weekend on Saturday with a 5-2 win over the Cameron Yellowjackets, leaning on disciplined at-bats and a stellar pitching performance from Cooper McGee.
Dewar again jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a sacrifice bunt by Johnathan Wilson and an RBI opportunity created by Braxton Wiebe. Cameron tied the game in the fourth, but the Dragons regained the lead in the fifth when an error brought home the go-ahead run.
McGee was outstanding on the mound, tossing a complete- game effort. He allowed just four hits and two runs over seven innings while striking out nine and walking three. The Dragons’ defense backed him up with a flawless performance, committing no errors and turning two double plays.
Offensively, Tanner Wilson, Johnathan Wilson and Wiebe each recorded an RBI, while Dewar demonstrated patience at the plate with six walks. Braelin Lewis and Wiebe each drew two free passes.
Across the three-game stretch, Dewar combined explosive offense with clutch pitching, collecting 40 total hits while getting key contributions throughout the lineup. The Dragons’ ability to respond to adversity – particularly in the dramatic win over Tupelo – highlighted a team finding its rhythm at the right time.
Dewar will look to carry that momentum forward as they traveled to Central for their next contest on Tuesday.
