Deadline nears for party affiliation changes
By Patrick Ford Editor

With Oklahoma’s 2026 election cycle approaching, voters and potential candidates are being reminded of critical deadlines that will shape participation in the upcoming primary and general elections.

According to the Okmulgee County Election Board, the deadline to change party affiliation is March 31, marking the final opportunity for voters to update their registration ahead of the primary election process.

Election Board Secretary Ashley Carnes emphasized the importance of this deadline, noting that any requests submitted after March 31 cannot be processed immediately.

“If we receive your request after March 31, we are required by law to hold that request and process it in September,” Carnes said.

— Party Affiliation Rules & Restrictions

Oklahoma recognizes three political parties: Democratic, Republican and Libertarian. Voters must be registered with a political party to participate in that party’s primary election.

State law prohibits party affiliation changes between April 1 and Aug. 31 in even-numbered years, effectively locking in voter status for the primary election season.

Independent voters may only participate in a party’s primary if that party formally allows it. At this time, no recognized party in Oklahoma has opened its primaries to Independent voters.

However, all registered voters regardless of party affiliation – are eligible to vote in general elections.

Voters can update their party affiliation online through the OK Voter Portal or by submitting a new voter registration application. Applications are available through the State Election Board or at the Okmulgee County Election Board office, located at 314 W. 7th Street, Room 102, in Okmulgee in the county courthouse.

– Candidate filing period approaches For those seeking public office, the official candidate filing period is set for April 1 through April 3 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Candidates for federal, state, legislative, judicial and district attorney positions will file with the Oklahoma State Election Board during this three-day window.

Offices open for filing in 2026 include:

• Federal Offices: U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative seats

• State Executive Offices: Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, State Treasurer, Superintendent of Public Instruction, State Auditor and Inspector, Commissioner of Labor, State Insurance Commissioner and District Attorney

• Legislative Offices: State Senate (even-numbered districts) and all State House of Representatives seats

• Judicial Retention Offices: Selected Supreme Court justices, Court of Criminal Appeals judges, Court of Civil Appeals judges, District Judges and Associate District Judges In addition to state-level races, several Okmulgee County offices will also be on the 2026 ballot, including: • County Treasurer

• County Assessor

• County Commissioners for Districts 1 & 3 – Looking Ahead to the 2026 Election Cycle The 2026 election year will include a wide range of high-profile races, from federal congressional seats to statewide executive leadership and local county offices. Terms for many of these positions will begin in early January 2027, depending on the office.

Election officials encourage both voters and prospective candidates to act promptly to meet all deadlines and ensure eligibility.

For additional information, residents can contact the Okmulgee County Election Board at 918756-2365 or visit the State Election Board website.

As the election season begins to take shape, these early deadlines serve as a crucial first step in determining both who will appear
