The Beggs Golden Demons opened play at the Gulf Coast Classic in Gulf Shores, Ala. with a hard-fought matchup against a familiar opponent, the Lincoln Christian Bulldogs, but came up just short in a 4-3 walk-off loss Monday.

In a game defined by pitching, timely hitting, and late-inning drama, Beggs battled through nine innings before Lincoln Christian capitalized in the final frame. With the score tied entering the bottom of the ninth, a combination of contact and a defensive miscue allowed the Bulldogs to push across the winning run.

Despite the outcome, Beggs delivered a strong overall performance, out-hitting Lincoln Christian 9-4 and showing discipline at the plate throughout the contest. The Demons also turned a key double play defensively, highlighting their ability to execute in critical moments.

The early innings were controlled by pitching on both sides. Beggs starter Jerrett Hammer set the tone, working 4.1 innings without allowing a run or a hit while striking out six. He navigated through four walks but consistently worked out of trouble to keep the game scoreless through the first four innings.

Lincoln Christian matched that effort early, and the game remained tied 0-0 until the fifth inning when Beggs broke through. Dayson Sparkman delivered the first run of the game with an RBI single, giving the Demons a 1-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs responded in the sixth inning, using a single to center field to even the score at 1-1. From there, both teams held firm defensively, sending the game into the late innings still deadlocked.

Beggs regained momentum in the top of the ninth inning. With runners on base, Colton McCoy came through with a clutch two-RBI single, putting the Demons in front 3-1 and in position to secure the win. McCoy finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, leading Beggs with two runs batted in. Sparkman also recorded a multihit performance, going 2-for-4, while contributing the team’s first RBI.

Additional offensive contributions came from across the lineup, as Beggs’ nine hits were spread among several players. The team showed patience as well, drawing four walks and consistently putting pressure on Lincoln Christian’s pitching staff.

However, the Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the ninth. A sacrifice fly brought home one run, followed by a base hit that tied the game. Moments later, a defensive error allowed the winning run to cross the plate, sealing the 4-3 result.

Kash Coale worked in relief for Beggs, pitching the remainder of the game and allowing four hits and four runs while striking out two. While the final inning proved decisive, Beggs’ pitching staff held Lincoln Christian to just four hits overall, keeping the Demons in control for much of the contest.

Although the loss was a tough one, Beggs showed plenty of positives in their opening game of the tournament. The Demons demonstrated strong pitching, consistent offensive production, and the ability to respond in key moments against a quality opponent.

With the Gulf Coast Classic underway, Beggs looked to build on that performance as the tournament continued, aiming to turn close games into victories while maintaining the level of play displayed in their opener.
