The Beggs Golden Demons put together a solid performance at the plate Wednesday but were unable to overcome key moments as they fell 6-2 to the Kirkwood Cobras during tournament play in Gulf Shores.
Despite out-hitting Kirkwood 8-6, Beggs struggled to convert opportunities into runs, while the Cobras capitalized on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to secure the win.
Kirkwood struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, using a groundout to bring in a run and take a 1-0 lead. Beggs answered in the second inning with its most productive stretch of the game. Kash Coale and Dayson Sparkman delivered back-to-back doubles down the left field line, each driving in a run to give the Demons a 2-1 advantage.
The lead was shortlived, however, as Kirkwood responded in the bottom half of the second. A pair of run-producing plays allowed the Cobras to regain the lead at 3-2. From there, Kirkwood continued to build separation, adding one run in the third, one in the fourth, and another in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-2.
Beggs continued to put runners on base throughout the game but was unable to deliver the timely hit needed to close the gap. The Demons finished with eight hits, led by Dallas Wilson, who recorded a multi-hit performance to pace the lineup. Additional hits came from multiple contributors, including Coale and Sparkman, whose extra- base hits accounted for both of Beggs’ runs.
Coale and Sparkman each drove in one run, providing the offensive highlights for Beggs. The Demons also showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks while working through competitive atbats against Kirkwood’s pitching staff.
On the mound, Beggs utilized a trio of pitchers. Toby Duclos started and worked two innings, allowing two hits and three runs while striking out one and walking three. Cody Woods provided the bulk of the relief effort, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing four hits and three runs, though none were earned, while recording two strikeouts. Ethan Davison closed out the game, tossing two-thirds of an inning without allowing a run.
Defensively, Beggs turned a key double play, helping limit additional scoring opportunities for Kirkwood. However, the Cobras remained active on the basepaths, collecting multiple stolen bases and consistently applying pressure throughout the game.
Kirkwood’s ability to take advantage of key situations proved to be the difference, as they scored in five of the first six innings. While Beggs matched the Cobras in hits, the timing of those hits favored Kirkwood, allowing them to maintain control after reclaiming the lead in the second inning.
Although the result did not fall in their favor, Beggs showed encouraging signs at the plate with consistent contact and contributions from throughout the lineup. The Demons’ ability to generate hits and create scoring opportunities remains a positive as they continue tournament play. Beggs will look to build on that offensive production moving forward while focusing on limiting opponents’ momentum in key innings. The Demons return home to face Stigler on Monday at Connors State College, aiming to turn strong performances into results as the season progresses.
