The Beggs Golden Demons returned to their home field last Thursday looking to build momentum early in the season but ran into a strong Dewey squad that capitalized on early opportunities and claimed a 13-1 victory.
Dewey wasted little time setting the tone, using a big first inning to grab control of the game. The visitors plated five runs in the opening frame, beginning with an RBI single by Chase Miller. Mason Snellgrove followed with another run-scoring hit before Jackson Fox drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home another run. Dewey continued to pressure the Beggs defense, and a miscue allowed two more runs to cross the plate as the inning closed with Dewey holding a 5-0 advantage.
The second inning proved even more difficult for the Demons as Dewey extended its lead with a six-run surge. Easton Davis highlighted the inning with an RBI double, while Layne Gastel added a run-scoring single. Snellgrove later drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in another run, and Fox was hit by a pitch that forced in another. Eddie Rice followed with a walk that also drove in a run, and Snellgrove added to the tally by tagging up and scoring to push the Dewey lead to 11-0.
Dewey continued to add insurance runs as the game moved along. A sacrifice fly by Gastel in the third inning made it 12-0, and another run in the fourth extended the advantage to 13-0.
Beggs showed determination throughout the contest and managed to break through in the fifth inning to avoid the shutout. Owen Holland delivered the highlight for the Demons with a run batted in, accounting for Beggs’ lone run of the game.
The Demons collected four hits in the contest, with Ethan Davison, Lane Kelley, Owen Holland and Dallas Wilson each recording a hit. Holland finished 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with the game’s only RBI.
Ty Woods took the mound to start the game for Beggs and worked one inning, allowing five hits and nine runs, though only three were earned. The Demons used a pair of relievers to finish the contest, with Ethan Davison and Kash Coale each contributing innings on the mound.
Despite the loss, Beggs continued to battle throughout the game, with contributions from multiple players both at the plate and on the mound as the Demons look to regroup early in the season. Beggs now stands at 1-2 on the year as the team continues to develop and gain experience heading deeper into the schedule. Next up, Beggs will host a home game against Morris at Connors State College in Warner.
