Freezin’ for a Reason

Freezin’ for a Reason

Community members will soon have a chance to brave the cold for a meaningful cause as the Okmulgee County Special Athletic Association (OCSAA) prepares to host its annual Shark Shiver fundraiser on Saturday, March 7.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Okmulgee Elks Lodge, 701 S. Mission, bringing together families, supporters and athletes for an afternoon of food, fellowship and fundraising.

The Shark Shiver serves as one of OCSAA’s signature yearly events, helping sustain programs that provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual or physical disabilities. Through these opportunities, participants gain confidence, develop physical skills and build lasting friendships while experiencing the joy of competition.

Event organizers say the community’s support plays a vital role in ensuring those programs continue to thrive.

The day’s activities will include a lighthearted but chilly highlight – the official Shark Shiver plunge – with participant sign-up beginning at 1 p.m. and the jump scheduled for 2 p.m. Spectators are encouraged to attend, cheer on participants and help create an energetic atmosphere.

In addition to the plunge, attendees can enjoy an Indian taco dinner served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plates will be available for $12 each, with proceeds benefiting OCSAA programming and athlete support needs.

Organizers emphasize that the event is designed to be welcoming for all ages, whether individuals choose to participate in the plunge, share a meal or simply stop by to show encouragement.

Fundraising events such as Shark Shiver help offset costs associated with equipment, travel, uniforms and training opportunities that allow local athletes to compete throughout the year.

Community members interested in supporting OCSAA are invited to attend, participate or contribute through donations during the event.

As March 7 approaches, organizers hope Okmulgee County residents will come together once again to make waves for a good cause and prove that sometimes the coldest challenges can warm the biggest hearts.

For additional details, sponsorship opportunities or to register in advance, community members may contact Tim VanBrunt at 918-319-0527 or via email at vanbrunttim@gmail.com.
