County teams battle through District, Regional action

Basketball teams across Okmulgee County have been busy over the past two weeks as district and regional play began, with several teams picking up key wins and others preparing for postseason matchups later this week.

Among the county’s strongest recent performances, the Dewar Dragons continued their postseason push with a district victory over Quinton, 44-29, followed by a regional win over Wright City, 58-43. Dewar’s success has kept the Dragons firmly in the hunt as regional play continues.

The Wilson Tigers have also been gaining momentum at the right time. After defeating Crossover Prep Academy 90-64 to close out regular-season play, Wilson rolled through district competition with an 88-26 win over Depew and followed that with an 8362 regional victory over Earlsboro.

On the girls side, Wilson has remained competitive in postseason play, earning a district win over Depew before falling in a narrow 52-50 contest to Covington-Douglas. The Lady Tigers are scheduled to continue regional play later this week.

Several county teams have been preparing for district tournaments set to begin in the coming days. The Preston Pirates and Lady Pirates were set to host district games on Feb. 19, while Beggs teams are scheduled to travel to Chandler, and Morris squads will compete at Victory Christian. Okmulgee teams are slated to play at Kiefer, and Henryetta will travel to Eufaula for district play.

In recent regular-season action, Beggs’ boys team strung together wins over Preston, Henryetta and Morris before falling in overtime to Hilldale, while Morris picked up victories over Henryetta, Haskell and Caney Valley during a busy stretch of games.

The Henryetta Lady Knights also turned in solid performances, earning wins over Morris, Beggs and Holdenville, while Preston’s Lady Pirates recorded victories over Beggs and Kellyville.

Schulter teams concluded district play last week, with the Lady Bulldogs advancing to regional competition at Maud, where they will look to extend their season.
