After a pause due to damage at the facility, the Dunbar All-School Center (old Banneker) and New Salem Baptist Church has resumed their weekly bean dinners served with cornbread.
The event has been set up primarily to meet the needs of the community by offering a comforting, free meal. This is specifically aimed at helping the unhoused. Promoters of the event appreciate donations to help the program continue.
This past week, approximately 25 people were, and because of the ongoing repairs after a catastrophic water line break, meals were either as to-go or attendees could sit outside at tables set up. A delicious bowl of Cajun-style red beans and rice were served.
The meal will be every Tuesday at 420 W. 6th Street, until further notice, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., or until all meals have been distributed. The organizers remind the public though, serving those who are unhoused is the first priority of this event. Other individuals who may attend and are able to donate, those funds will be gladly accepted to help even more individuals in the community.
To ensure the continuation of this vital program, the partnership is collecting donations of brown and white beans, along with monetary donations. Community members are encouraged to contribute to help continue feeding the community, as all donations will be greatly appreciated.
