The Wilson Tigers head into postseason play riding momentum after a dominant 9064 victory over Crossover Prep Academy on Tuesday, fueled by a standout performance from Ke’shon Shelburn and a balanced team effort.
Shelburn recorded a double- double, scoring 28 points and pulling down 10 rebounds while also contributing three blocked shots to lead the Tigers on both ends of the floor. Wilson controlled the game from the opening tip, never trailing and building a lead that grew to as much as 37 points late in the contest.
Wilson set the tone early, outscoring Crossover Prep Academy 26-10 in the first quarter behind sharp shooting and crisp ball movement. The Tigers recorded eight assists in the opening period alone, showcasing the unselfish play that has become a hallmark of the team’s offense.
Leading 15-7 midway through the first quarter, Wilson broke the game open with an 18-3 run, creating separation that the visitors were never able to overcome. The Tigers carried a 52–35 advantage into halftime and continued to extend the margin in the second half, including a 14-point run that pushed the lead to 76-45.
Wilson’s efficiency on offense played a key role in the victory. The Tigers shot 24-of-47 on twopoint attempts and were equally effective from long range, connecting on 11-of-23 three-pointers for 48 percent. Aiden Barnard and Ke’shon Shelburn each knocked down multiple shots from beyond the arc, helping stretch the defense and open scoring opportunities inside.
Rebounding was another decisive factor. Wilson controlled the paint with 40 total rebounds, led by Shelburn’s 10 boards. The Tigers also shared the basketball effectively, recording 25 assists on 35 made baskets. Jacquorrie Shelburn led the team with six assists while adding 15 points of his own.
Barnard finished with 14 points, while Alec Ganote and Talan Dobson each contributed nine points. Esiah King and Tepoyv Williams added five points apiece, Andrew Wilson scored three, and Rylan Hicks chipped in two to round out the scoring.
Defensively, Wilson protected the rim well, recording three blocked shots, all by Ke’shon Shelburn, and limiting Crossover Prep Academy’s offensive rhythm throughout the game.
The Wilson Lady Tigers were originally scheduled to play Tuesday as well, but their contest was canceled due to illness on the Crossover Prep team.
— District play begins
With the regular season winding down, both Wilson teams now turn their focus to district tournament action, where the stakes increase and every game carries postseason implications.
The Wilson Tigers entered district play in a three-team Class B boys bracket at Depew. In the tournament format, Covington-Douglas and Depew were scheduled to meet in the opening game, with Wilson set to face the winner in the district championship game Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., also at Depew.
The structure of district tournaments provides some margin for advancement, as both the champion and runner-up move on to regional competition. That means the Tigers need just one victory to secure their place in the next round and keep their postseason hopes alive. Regional games are scheduled at sites including Cameron, Indianola and Glencoe, with teams required to win multiple games to advance to the Area IV tournament in Cleveland. From there, teams can earn a berth in the state tournament, the ultimate goal for programs across Class B.
— Lady Tigers face tough road
The Wilson Lady Tigers also began district play this week in District 8 of the Class B-I girls bracket. Wilson was scheduled to face Depew in the opening round Thursday evening at 6 p.m. at Depew.
The winner of that matchup advances to face Covington-Douglas in the district championship game, with both teams assured of advancing to regional competition regardless of the championship result.
Like the boys bracket, the road to state will require multiple wins through regionals and area tournaments, making every possession critical as the postseason unfolds.
