Two deputies recovering after officer-involved shooting, standoff
By Patrick Ford Editor

An Okmulgee man is facing multiple felony charges after a standoff with law enforcement on Feb. 5 left two Okmulgee County deputies wounded and prompted a large multi-agency response in the 600 block of S. Morton Avenue.

According to an affidavit filed in Okmulgee County District Court and booking records from the Okmulgee County Criminal Justice Authority, officers were initially dispatched to a disturbance at a residence in the area.

— Initial Call & Confrontation

Investigators state that when officers arrived, a complainant reported that Ron-El Ramon Miles, 56, had accused them of shooting his dogs. Officers made contact with Miles in the backyard, where he was attempting to show injuries to dogs that were chained in separate locations.

During the encounter, officers conducted a records check and learned that Miles had a confirmed warrant through the Okmulgee County Sheriff ’s Office. According to the affidavit, Miles appeared to overhear radio traf- fic about the warrant and began moving toward the back door of his residence. When officers attempted to approach, Miles ran inside and closed the door, blocking access.

Officers forced entry into the residence in an attempt to arrest Miles. After entering, officers reported losing sight of him and began issuing commands for him to surrender. Investigators state that Miles yelled at officers to leave the house.

As officers moved toward a hallway area, they heard a gunshot and observed debris from a wall near where they had been positioned. Officers retreated from the residence and requested additional units.

— Multi-Agency Response A perimeter was established, and numerous agencies responded to assist, including the Okmulgee County Sheriff ’s Office, Okmulgee Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Muscogee Nation Lighthorse Police, Henryetta Police Department, EMS personnel and others. The Okmulgee County Sheriff ’s Office Special Operations Team established command and began issuing verbal commands for Miles to exit the residence.

— Deputies Wounded

According to investigators, as three Okmulgee County deputies approached the northwest corner of the residence, Miles appeared in a kitchen window and fired multiple shots toward them. Two deputies were struck by gunfire and transported by medical helicopter to a Tulsa hospital. A third deputy returned fire in defense of the wounded officers.

— Deputies Recovering

Okmulgee County Sheriff Eddy Rice provided an update the following day, expressing gratitude for the support shown to his department and the injured deputies.

“Sheriff Rice is thankful for all the support and prayers for the two deputies shot yesterday evening,” the Sheriff ’s Office stated Feb. 6. “Both deputies are recovering in a Tulsa hospital and are expected to be released later in the week or weekend.”

Sheriff Rice also thanked the many agencies and personnel who responded to assist during the incident.

“He thanks the Okmulgee Police Department, Okmulgee Fire Department, the District 25 District Attorney’s Office, EMS, Tulsa Life Flight, OSBI, Henryetta Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Muscogee Nation Lighthorse and all others involved in this situation,” the statement said. “Both deputies were medivac’d with efficiency, which aided greatly in their prompt medical treatment.”

Rice also expressed appreciation for the support offered by surrounding law enforcement agencies who assisted with calls during and after the situation.

In a subsequent update, Sheriff Rice reported encouraging news. “Both deputies that were shot last night have now been released from the hospital,” he said. “Both will be recovering for the next few weeks. Please continue to keep them in your prayers as their bodies continue to heal.”

On Friday evening, a Prayer Vigil was held downtown on behalf of all those involved in the incident.

— Evidence Recovered

After a search warrant was obtained, agents with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported locating a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol, a .22-caliber rifle with a scope, and multiple spent .45 ACP cartridge casings inside the residence. Investigators also documented evidence consistent with gunfire inside the home.

Court records indicate Miles has previous felony convictions in Okmulgee County District Court dating back to 1991 and 2002.

— Charges Filed

Authorities requested that Miles be held on multiple charges, including:

• Shooting with Intent to Kill (multiple counts)

• Felon in Possession of a Firearm

• Obstructing an Officer

• Resisting an Officer

• Petit Larceny

• Removing or Altering a Firearm Serial Number Booking records indicate bond totaling more than $1.7 million.

— Investigation Ongoing

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation, which remains ongoing. Additional details may be released as the case proceeds through Okmulgee County District Court.
