The Road to State Begins

The path to the State Basketball Tournament is officially underway, as the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has released the postseason brackets for Classes A and B. District tournaments begin Feb. 12-14, followed by regionals Feb. 17, 19 and 21, area tournaments Feb. 26-28, and the state tournament scheduled for March 3-7.

Several Okmulgee County teams are positioned to begin postseason play, with Dewar, Wilson and Schulter all appearing in district brackets and aiming to advance through the regional and area rounds.

— Dewar Dragons & Lady Dragons (Class A) Both the Dewar boys and girls teams will open postseason play at home in District 7, hosting Quinton.

The Lady Dragons are scheduled to face Quinton at Dewar on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m., with both the winner and runner-up advancing to regional play.

The Dewar boys will follow the same matchup and format in District 7, taking on Quinton at Dewar on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m.

If Dewar advances, the teams would move into the regional rounds, with games scheduled at sites including Allen and Quinton in the winners and consolation brackets.

From there, teams must survive the regional tournament to earn a spot in the Area IV tournament at Wilburton, where the final state qualifiers will be determined.

— Wilson Tigers Lady Tigers (Class B-I)

The Wilson Tigers are set to begin their postseason journey this week as the OSSAA basketball playoffs get underway across the state. According to the Class B-I boys bracket, Wilson will compete in District 8, opening play on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Depew.

The Tigers enter the district tournament in a three-team bracket that includes Covington-Douglas and Depew. The opening game will feature Covington-Douglas against Depew, with Wilson advancing to face the winner in the district championship game on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m., also at Depew.

As with all district tournaments, both the winner and runner-up will advance to regional competition, meaning Wilson needs just one victory to keep its season alive and move into the next phase of the postseason.

Should the Tigers advance, they would move into the regional round, with games scheduled at sites including Earlsboro and Glencoe, depending on bracket placement and results. Teams must survive the winners or consolation brackets to earn one of the qualifying spots for the Area IV Tournament at Cleveland, where the final berths in the State Tournament will be decided. Regional play is scheduled for Feb. 17, 19 and 21, followed by the area tournament Feb. 26-28, and the State Tournament March 3-7.

The Wilson Lady Tigers will begin district play in District 8 of the Class B-I girls bracket. Wilson is scheduled to face Depew in the opening round at Depew on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to face Covington-Douglas for the district championship.

As with all district tournaments, both the winner and runner-up will advance to regional competition.

Regional games for this bracket are scheduled at sites including Cameron, Indianola and Glencoe, with teams needing multiple wins to advance to the Area IV tournament at Cleveland and ultimately earn a berth in the state tournament.

— Schulter Bulldogs & Lady Bulldogs (Class B-II) Schulter will also be represented in the Class B-II postseason on both the boys and girls side.

The Schulter boys are listed in District 6, where they will face Maud in the opening round at Maud on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. The winner advances to meet Bowlegs for the district title, with both finalists moving on to regionals.

The Schulter Lady Bulldogs are also placed in District 6 of the Class B-II girls bracket. They are scheduled to face Maud in the district opener at Maud on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m., with Bowlegs awaiting the winner in the district championship game.

Regional contests for these brackets are set for sites such as Braggs, Agra, New Lima and Maud, with the Area IV tournament scheduled at the Mvskoke Dome in Okmulgee – giving local fans a chance to see potential state qualifiers compete close to home.

— The Road Ahead

Across all classes, the postseason format remains the same: district champions and runners-up advance to regional tournaments, where multiple rounds determine qualifiers for area tournaments. From the area round, only the top teams advance to the State Tournament in early March.

For Okmulgee County fans, the coming weeks promise high-stakes basketball and the possibility of deep playoff runs. Dewar, Wilson and Schulter each face challenging paths, but as the postseason begins, every team starts with the same goal – survive and advance on the road to state.
