osuit campus police department

As communities across Oklahoma pause to salute the men and women of law enforcement, special recognition is being given to those who quietly and consistently protect one of the area’s most important institutions – the OSUIT Campus Police Department.

Though their work often happens behind the scenes, OSUIT’s campus officers are on the front lines every day, safeguarding students, faculty, staff and visitors while ensuring a secure learning environment across campus and beyond.

— Leadership rooted in experience The department is led by Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Matthew Wooliver, who brings 18 years of law enforcement service to the role. Under his leadership, the OSUIT Campus Police Department has built a reputation for professionalism, approachability and proactive campus safety.

Supporting that mission is a dedicated team of certified officers whose collective experience reflects a deep commitment to public service:

• Sgt. Bunnie Jesse – 6 years

• Officer Sam Matthews – 14 years

• Officer Gary Makinson – 3 years

• Officer Jaylen Mayfield – 2 years The department is further strengthened by part-time officers who continue to serve with distinction:

• Part-Time Officer Chris Cantrell 14 years

• Part-Time Officer Patrick Zickefoose – 4 years Together, this team represents decades of combined experience focused on campus safety and community trust.

— A Broad & Vital Mission

The OSUIT Campus Police Department serves the entire OSUIT campus, including the GOPO dormitory in downtown Okmulgee, and also provides security services for Green Country Technology Center. Their responsibilities extend well beyond traditional patrol duties. The department oversees law enforcement operations, emergency management, communications, traffic and parking enforcement, and the critical task of compiling and distributing Jeanne Clery Act Campus Crime Statistics. Each year, the department prepares the Annual Security Report, released by October 1, ensuring transparency and compliance with federal requirements.

— Service in Action

Over the past couple years, OSUIT Campus Police generated hundreds of official reports for ODIS, reflecting their active role in maintaining campus safety and responding to incidents. Just as importantly, officers have provided hundreds of vehicle assists, offering jumpstarts and vehicle unlocks to students, faculty and staffsmall acts of service that often make a big difference in someone’s day.

Beyond calls for service, officers conduct proactive patrols across campus roadways, walkways and interior areas, while also monitoring alarm systems and video surveillance. They provide security and traffic control for campus events, performances and gatherings, helping ensure that academic and student life activities can proceed safely.

The department also enforces university regulations and state laws, investigates all crimes occurring on campus, maintains detailed records and offers security audits and investigative assistance to campus administrators. Courtesy services, including safety escorts, further demonstrate the department’s commitment to being both protectors and partners within the campus community.

— Quiet Dedication, Lasting Impact While OSUIT Campus Police officers may not always be in the spotlight, their presence is felt every dayin safe classrooms, secure residence halls, and a campus environment where learning can thrive.

As law enforcement agencies across the region are honored, the OSUIT Campus Police Department stands as a reminder that dedicated service, professionalism and genuine care for the community are at the heart of effective campus policing.
