Beggs City & Rural Fire Departments

The Beggs area is protected by two distinct yet cooperative fire departments, the Beggs City Fire Department (BFD) and Beggs Rural Fire Association (BRFA). These departments collaborate closely, sharing personnel and resources to ensure comprehensive fire protection for the city and the surrounding rural areas.

— Distinct Missions, United Purpose The Beggs City Fire Department, led by Chief Matt Cooperrider, focuses on safeguarding the City of Beggs, located west of US-75 along State Highway 16. Meanwhile, the Beggs Rural Fire Association, under Chief Rick Mitchell, serves the expansive rural area around Beggs. The BRFA’s jurisdiction spans from Ferguson Road in the north to just south of State Highway 16 and from the Okmulgee/Creek County line in the west to 220 Road in the east. This makes it one of the largest fire districts in Oklahoma.

Together, these departments comprise 27 firefighters, many of whom serve both teams. This crossover ensures that Beggs firefighters are wellequipped and experienced to respond to emergencies across both city and rural areas.

— Modern Equipment & Resources The Beggs fire departments maintain an impressive array of tools and vehicles to meet diverse challenges. Notable resources include:

• Three bulldozers with carriers

• A thermal drone for aerial assessments • Battery-operated extrication tools (4 sets)

• Hydraulic extrication tools (3 units)

• A 60-ton airbag system

• A 75-foot ladder truck

• Three engines and four brush trucks

• Two Ultra High-Pressure rigs for versatile firefighting applications, including grass fires, structure fires, and tank battery fires

• SCBA refilling compressor

• Approximately 21,000 gallons of water in tankers These tools, combined with the dedication of the firefighters, have enabled the departments to maintain a 4/4B ISO rating, a testament to their efficiency, coordination, and water supply management. The departments have averaged around 175 calls per year, demonstrating their commitment to rapid and effective emergency response.

— Community Support & Lower Insurance Rates The departments benefit from community support through a county sales tax that funds the Okmulgee County fire departments. This funding has facilitated the acquisition of new firefighting gear, modern vehicles, and advanced equipment. As a result, homeowner insurance rates in the Beggs area have been positively impacted.

The BRFA also provides a convenient online subscription payment system for rural residents, ensuring sustainable funding for the department’s operations. Subscriptions can be paid each February via their website at BRFA Website.
