Demons break away after halftime to down county-rival Knights
By TIFFANY BELL SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Beggs and Henryetta opened Tuesday night’s regular-season contest locked in a fast-paced first quarter that signaled a competitive tone. Both teams traded early scores, and neither managed to create separation as the scoreboard reflected a 12-12 tie after eight minutes. The second quarter carried more of the same, with Henryetta adding steady perimeter scoring and Beggs matching through balanced inside and outside touches. Henryetta edged ahead 23-22 at the half, keeping momentum in front of a large and vocal home crowd inside the Henryetta gym.

The turning point came immediately after the break. Beggs exited the locker room on fire, applying sharper defensive pressure, pushing the tempo and turning clean stops into efficient scoring trips. The Demons rattled off 22 third-quarter points and flipped the game’s flow in a matter of minutes. Ball movement opened lanes, transition chances stacked up, and the scoreboard swung emphatically in Beggs’ favor as they built a 44-32 advantage through three quarters.

Offensively, Beggs distributed production across the lineup. Jordan Wesley sparked in multiple stretches and finished with 15 points, while Rickey Smith added 12, including eight in the fourth quarter to help the Demons close the door. Bobby Baker supplied eight points, Baker Copeland and AJ Estrada each added eight, Mike Lewis contributed nine and Aiden Taylor closed with four. Paxton Stafford and Brayden King rounded out the scoring with one point apiece.

Henryetta stayed within range through the first half and attempted to counter in the fourth quarter behind scoring from multiple spots on the floor. James Joslin and Kade Sanders both finished with 14 points to lead the Knights, while Nakona Johnson added nine. Maverix Randleman posted two, Tyson Wieland had four and Mike McNac tallied four. Henryetta’s late push trimmed the margin briefly, but Beggs absorbed the final possessions and maintained control to secure the road win.

Final scoring reflected the shift out of halftime, with Beggs outscoring Henryetta 22-9 in the third quarter before closing with a 21-point fourth. Henryetta added 15 in the final period but could not overcome the momentum swing that defined the second half.

For Henryetta, the night represented another competitive outing against a familiar opponent. Perimeter shooting and first-half execution kept the contest tight, and the Knights matched pace early before Beggs changed the rhythm. The large home crowd remained engaged throughout, backing Henryetta’s final effort and helping elevate the late-game energy inside the gym.

For Beggs, the trip served as a meaningful bounce-back performance. The Demons had previously faced Henryetta in tournament play, and Tuesday’s meeting provided the response they had been seeking. The halftime adjustment, defensive pressure and balanced scoring produced a decisive 65-47 finish and sent Beggs home with a victory that reflected both improvement and urgency within the regular- season slate.

With the win, Beggs improved to 5-11 and hosted Quinton on Jan. 22 at the Demon Dome, a game moved up due to expected winter weather. Henryetta dropped to 4-10 and turned their attention to the Checotah Tournament last week.

Beggs was scheduled to take on Morris on the road, while Henryetta was slated to travel to Kellyville yesterday, Jan. 27, weather permitting.
