Virgil Lee Bonham

January 10, 2026

Virgil Lee Bonham, 79, of Okmulgee, passed away on January 10, 2026. Born and raised in Okmulgee, Virgil lived a life defined by hard work, grit and a deep love for the land, livestock, and family that shaped him.

As a young man, Virgil was heavily involved in rodeo-riding broncs and serving as a rodeo clown, a role reserved for the toughest and bravest among them. He worked as a ranch hand for several of the larger ranches in the area, learning the value of long days, honest labor and caring for horses, cattle and livestock-things he loved his entire life. Early on, he also cherished time spent fishing and hunting with his father, memories that stayed close to his heart.

Virgil was known to be a true workaholic. His family often joked that seeing him sitting still was a rare sight. Those moments when he slowed down – watching a football game or simply spending time together-were especially cherished. His strong work ethic carried into his lifelong career as a semi-truck driver. Over the years, Virgil drove in every direction imaginable across this great nation, earning respect as a dependable and tireless driver.

“Old school” in the very best way, Virgil had a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. He took joy in making people laugh – and sometimes blush – and was never one to hold back his opinion. He spoke his mind honestly and directly, a trait his family came to admire and expect.

A devoted father, Virgil was remembered by his children for his patience and care, especially when breaking horses and making sure each of them learned how to ride. He passed on not just skills, but values-perseverance, responsibility and pride in doing things right.

Virgil also loved classic westerns, from Gunsmoke to John Wayne films, he could happily watch them all day if time allowed.

He is survived by his children: Virgil Bonham, Jr. and wife Machelle; Tammy Bonham; Gregory Bonham; Son Dennis Bonham; Connie Lamm and Freddie; Roberta and husband Richard Polk; Theresa and husband Marcus Manns; Deanna and husband Rodney Campbell; and Jerry and wife Marsha Lamm. He is also survived by a large host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many loved ones.

Virgil Lee Bonham will be remembered as a hardworking cowboy at heart, a devoted father and grandfather and a man whose strength, honesty and humor left a lasting mark on all who knew him.

The family will be holding a celebration of life at the Okmulgee Community Center on February 15, 2026, from 1-3 p.m.

Cremation Services have been entrusted to Schaudt’s Okmulgee Funeral Service. Friends and family may leave condolences and kind words of comfort at www.schaudtfuneralservice. com.
