Morris School board approves personnel, contracts
By Patrick Ford Editor

The Morris Board of Education conducted its January regular meeting with several personnel actions, financial approvals and academic updates, including acceptance of a major donation, contract action for the superintendent and early steps toward future bond planning.

Among the items approved on the consent agenda was a $12,500 donation from the Viersen Foundation, which board members formally accepted as part of routine financial business. The consent agenda also included approval of financial reports, encumbrances for Fiscal Year 2026 across multiple funds, activity fund reports and a transfer of $235 from the Morris High School Activity Fund to the Junior Class Activity Fund.

The board also accepted the resignations of Tim Stewart and Braden Roberts, marking personnel changes within the district. In addition, Avery Goodnight was approved on the district’s substitute list, and an overnight stay was authorized for Morris band students attending the All-State Band event scheduled for Feb. 12-14.

— Superintendent’s Report

During her superintendent’s report, Becky Alexander reviewed several key academic and operational topics. Alexander reported that the district’s mid-term adjustment increased by 1.01 percent, reflecting updated enrollment and funding calculations.

Alexander also reviewed the school report card, with building principals sharing how their sites are addressing performance results. Principals outlined how they are using the OTEP team of teachers to provide targeted instructional support and intentional staff development, aimed at improving student outcomes. Each site also discussed strategies being implemented to combat chronic absenteeism, a focus area across the district.

Looking ahead, Alexander told the board that bond planning will begin this month, with architects expected to start working with the district as early planning discussions get underway.

— Personnel & Contract Actions

The board approved stipends for Teacher of the Year and Support Professional of the Year, with Alexander noting that the selection process will begin in February.

Following executive session, the board approved several personnel items, including the hiring of Marshall Been for an ISD support position with an extra duty assignment for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2026, and Heather Castlebury as a certified teacher with an extra duty assignment for the remainder of the FY 2026 school year.

Board members also approved a contract with Superintendent Becky Alexander covering Fiscal Years 2027 and 2028, continuing her leadership with Morris Public Schools.
