The Morris Public Schools community came together this week for a pair of heartfelt Veterans Day assemblies, creating a day filled with patriotism, gratitude and powerful reminders of the meaning of service.
The morning began at Morris Elementary, where students and staff welcomed local veterans with a warm, uplifting program. Pre-K and 4th grade students opened the ceremony with a special musical performance, their young voices filling the gym with pride and respect for those who have served. Their songs set a touching tone for the assembly and reflected the school’s commitment to teaching even its youngest learners about honoring America’s heroes.
The elementary program continued with remarks from third-grade teacher Laura Kerr, who served as the featured speaker. Kerr delivered an inspiring message about the importance of service – both in the military and in everyday life. She encouraged students to understand the sacrifices made by veterans and to consider the many ways they, too, can contribute positively to their community.
Following the elementary program, the focus shifted to the middle and high school campus, where students gathered for a second ceremony dedicated to honoring veterans. The MS/ HS assembly welcomed featured speaker David Nelson, a proud Morris alumnus, who shared stories and reflections from his own time in service. Nelson spoke about dedication, courage and citizenship – values he said were strengthened through his military experience and remain vital to shaping strong young leaders today.
Nelson’s message resonated deeply with the older students, offering a meaningful, real-world perspective on the significance of Veterans Day and the bravery demonstrated by those who wear the uniform.
Following the MS/HS assembly, Morris Schools hosted a Veterans Day Luncheon to honor guests who attended and to thank them for their service. Veterans, staff, and students shared food, conversation and stories – further reinforcing the district’s deep appreciation for those who have served.
Morris Public Schools expressed heartfelt gratitude to all veterans who participated, as well as to the dedicated educators, staff and students who helped make the day memorable.
“Thank you to all the veterans who shared their stories, and to our dedicated staff and students for making this a profoundly impactful day,” the district shared. “We honor your service! We are Eagle Pride!”
