FFA student recognized for project

Okmulgee High School student Abby Hirsch had a morning she’ll never forget on Monday, Oct. 20, after being surprised with a $500 Bomgaars Award for her outstanding fair project. Abby was one of just 26 students nationwide selected for this honor.

The surprise took place at the local Bomgaars store, where Assistant Manager Jess Collins helped coordinate the memorable moment. While Abby was shopping for feed, Collins paged her over the intercom. When Abby walked to the front and saw balloons in Jess’s hands, she knew something special was happening. Collins then proudly presented her with the award letter and gift card.

This recognition will help Abby continue to grow her agricultural pursuits. She was able to purchase feed, clippers and show supplies for her lambs and chickens – and still has funds left to cover additional feed costs or new supplies.

Abby has been an active member of the Okmulgee FFA since 8th grade and has held an officer position for the past two years. Over the last two years, she has dedicated herself to showing both lambs and chickens, continually improving her knowledge of breed standards, animal care and showmanship techniques.

Her hard work was previously recognized during her freshman year when she received a $1,000 scholarship from Domino’s Pizza, a proud and longtime supporter of the FFA program. This scholarship allowed Abby to expand her involvement with poultry projects and further delve into egg production breeds.

In addition to her achievements, Abby makes it a point to support local businesses that have supported her along the way. She regularly works with Bomgaars and Coalton Feed, keeping her purchases close to home and strengthening community ties. A special thank you goes to Bomgaars Assistant Manager Jess Collins for her active role in organizing the surprise and personally congratulating Abby on this remarkable achievement.

Abby’s mother couldn’t be prouder of her daughter’s accomplishment, sharing, “Congratulations, Abby! Keep it up – you will go far. Always remember your brother and I love you.”
