10 Years Ago (2015)

• The Orpheum Theatre advertised the movies “Paranormal Activity 6: The Ghost Dimension 3D” and “Hotel Transylvania 2,” screening Wednesdays and Thursdays starting at 7:15 p.m.

• Salvation Army Major James Taylor presented a pin to Janet Watkins in honor of 10 years of faithful service to the Family Thrift Store. Major Taylor was pictured with Watkins holding the pin, both with gleaming smiles.

• The Okmulgee Goju Team traveled to Russellville, Ark. to compete in the Last Showdown of 2000. Sponsored by the Japanese Okinawan Karate Foundation, the karate tournament also recognized Masayuki Ward, 10th degree black belt for his 50th anniversary in Martial Arts. The competitors were seen pictured with Masayuki Ward representing their placements in the tournament.

• State Senator Frank Shurden, State Representative Dale Turner, Okmulgee City Councilman Grant Griffin and State Representative M.C. Leist were pictured aside Okmulgee Mayor Gary Kelley as he cut the ribbon on the newly completed Hwy 75 N. Wood Drive Widening Project. The $5.2 million project began in August 1999 and was completed in late 2000, officially funded under Governor Frank Keating’s $1 billion Road Program passed by the Oklahoma Legislature in 1997.

• An anonymous tip led to the arrest of five individuals from the Tulsa area, after a close two-day surveillance of a local Okmulgee hotel room. Leaving the hotel room on a Wednesday night in two separate vehicles, one group was stopped along Hwy 75 at Cecilia Berryhill Road, while the other subjects were stopped about a mile further north. In addition, a six-year-old child was discovered with the individuals, who was believed to be a child of one of the women arrested at the time of the incident. The Okmulgee County D.A. Drug Task Force, Okmulgee County Sheriff ’s Department and Okmulgee police department netted “just-under” six ounces of methamphetamine, a .22 caliber Derringer, a .380 semi- automatic revolver, a 9mm semi-automatic revolver, two crank pipes and a knife.
