Everyone loves a black Labrador Retriever. But when that same dog happens to be a “lab mix,” suddenly, the world, while perhaps unintentionally, looks away.
Visit OKCOHumane.org right now, and you’ll notice something striking – about half of the dogs in our care are black. Beautiful, loyal, loving dogs with shiny coats, hopeful eyes and wagging tails.
— Black Dog Syndrome
In the animal rescue world, there’s a phenomenon known as “Black Dog Syndrome.” Studies and shelter data have shown that black dogs are adopted less often – and take significantly longer to find homes than their lighter- or spotted-colored counterparts.
Why? Researchers point to several factors: darker coats can make dogs harder to photograph, especially in dim lighting. Some people even subconsciously associate black animals with negative stereotypes or superstition (like black cats and Friday the 13th). Whatever the reason, it’s an unfair disadvantage that leaves countless wonderful dogs waiting far too long.
At Okmulgee County Humane Society (OKCO), we see it every day. We’ve received numerous requests from surrounding shelters and community members to take in more dogs – and ironically, most of those needing rescue right now are also black, often ‘dumped’ in the community. Our kennels in boarding are full, our fosters are stretched thin, and yet the pleas keep coming. Each one represents a life deserving of love and a chance.
This phenomenon doesn’t just affect individual dogs; it impacts entire rescue systems. When black dogs stay in shelters or foster homes longer, it limits space for other animals in need. Some organizations, heartbreakingly, even have to limit how many black dogs they can intake at a time simply to balance adoption odds. That’s how significant the challenge has become in many rescues across the country.
But we believe change starts with awareness – and compassion. That’s why we’re speaking up.
— How You Can Help
If you’ve ever considered adopting, now is the perfect time. Visit OKCOHumane.org to meet all of our adoptable dogs.
And if adoption isn’t possible right now, fostering is another powerful way to help. Fostering not only saves lives – it changes them. Every foster home opens a space for another dog to be rescued, offering a safe, loving environment until adoption day arrives.
At OKCO, we cover 100% of the costs – veterinary care, food, supplies – everything. All we ask for is your time, love, and attention. You provide the heart; we handle the rest.
And of course, there are many other ways to make a difference:
• Donate to help cover medical care, food and general costs.
• Volunteer to walk dogs, help at events or assist with transport.
• Share our posts on social media to help these dogs be seen by potential adopters.
Every single act of kindness helps shine a light on a dog that might otherwise go unseen.
— Gratitude for a Compassionate Community We want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who already supports OKCO through donations, volunteering, fostering and simply spreading the word. Your compassion and generosity make our mission possible.
You are the reason dogs like these get a second chance.
Now, we’re asking for one more act of kindness: help us find great homes for the animals in our care. Their forever homes are out there – maybe it’s yours.
Meet them all and apply to adopt today at OKCOHumane. org.
