-As uncertainty grows over a federal government shutdown continuing, Oklahoma Human Services (OKDHS) announced that funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may be temporarily suspended beginning Nov. 1.

According to a statement issued by OKDHS, “Due to the federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) notified Oklahoma Human Services that federal funding for SNAP will be suspended beginning Nov. 1, 2025.” The agency said it wants to ensure that all SNAP recipients are aware of the potential impact and can plan accordingly.

The OKDHS release explains that unless Congress resolves the shutdown, “no new SNAP benefits will be issued on Nov. 1.” Recipients can continue using their current benefits and any remaining balances on their EBT cards through Oct. 31. However, the agency cautioned that “it is unclear whether existing balances will remain available beginning Nov. 1, 2025.”

The statement urges residents to plan and budget carefully:

• “Continue using your benefits through October.”

• “Plan and budget carefully to ensure the best use of your existing SNAP benefits.”

• “Continue to submit all eligibility and recertification paperwork as usual.”

OKDHS emphasized that it is in close communication with federal officials, the Governor’s office, and other state leaders to monitor developments. “We understand how stressful this uncertainty can be for families, and we remain committed to supporting you through this process,” the statement read.

In Henryetta, leaders are already stepping forward to help those who could be affected. James Page, director of Joy in Life, said the organization is prepared to ensure no one goes hungry if SNAP benefits are disrupted.

“In the event that the food stamp program goes down, we are prepared to feed everyone at Joy in Life,” Page said.

Meals will be served at Joy in Life on the following schedule:

• Monday through Friday: 4:30-6:30 p.m.

• Saturday & Sunday: 12-1 p.m. Page said the group will be posting a registration sign-up to help them plan meal quantities appropriately.

“So that we don’t overcook, we would like to get an idea of how many will be coming to eat every day,” he said. “Be watching for that link to be provided.”

Despite the uncertainty, Page urged calm and community unity: “Though these times are tough, do not panic; we will provide meals to you all.”
