Morris dominates Spiro for first win of season
By Patrick Ford Editor

The Morris Eagles soared to their first victory of the season Friday night, delivering a complete team performance to crush the Spiro Bulldogs 43-6 on the road. Under the direction of Head Coach Jimmy Whitlock, the Eagles’ offense finally clicked on all cylinders, racking up 504 total yards and controlling the game from start to finish.

— Offensive Explosion Quarterback Landon Martin led the charge with 189 passing yards and two touchdowns, completing 9 of 17 attempts. His connection with Elijah Edwards proved unstoppable – Edwards finished with two receptions for 96 yards and both of Martin’s scoring throws, including a highlight-reel 60-yard bomb in the fourth quarter.

The Morris ground game was equally dominant. Chase Bumgarner powered through Spiro’s defense for 179 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns, including a 33-yard scoring run in the final quarter. Martin also contributed 59 yards rushing, while Grant Clay added 41 yards and a touchdown of his own. In total, the Eagles amassed 315 rushing yards on the night.

— Scoring Summary

The Eagles came out hot, jumping to a 14-0 first-quarter lead thanks to two short touchdown runs by Bumgarner. After a scoreless second quarter, Morris erupted again in the third – Clay punched in a 3-yard score, and Martin found Edwards for a 36yard touchdown to extend the lead to 29-0.

The fourth quarter sealed the win. Edwards’ 60-yard touchdown reception electrified the Morris sideline, followed by Bumgarner’s 33-yard dash to make it 43– 0. Spiro’s lone touchdown came late on a 48-yard run, but the extra point failed.

— Relentless Defense

While the offense was firing on all cylinders, the Morris defense was equally dominant, forcing four Spiro turnovers – including two interceptions and two fumble recoveries – while holding the Bulldogs to just 11 passing yards and 204 rushing yards.

Ethan Smith led the defensive unit with 13 total tackles (5 solo, 8 assisted) and two tackles for loss. Isaiah Taylor tallied seven tackles and two stops behind the line, while Bumgarner and Clay each added multiple key tackles. The secondary came up big, as Hayden Hodges, Bumgarner, Edwards, D. Andrews and G. Kelly each recorded interceptions.

Spiro’s offense struggled to find any rhythm against Morris’ swarming defense, managing only nine first downs and failing on all three fourthdown attempts.

— Special Teams Shine

Grant Clay handled kicking duties, going 3-for-3 on PATs and adding a 21-yard kickoff. Bumgarner also contributed six kickoffs for 136 total yards and one punt for 30 yards. Hodges was steady in the return game, fielding two punts for a total of eight yards.

The special teams’ consistency helped Morris maintain field position dominance all night long.
