The Okmulgee Fire Department has begun conducting routine tests of the city’s fire hydrants, with crews spotted downtown this week as they work their way from the west side of town to the east. The process is expected to take several weeks to complete.
According to the department, during the testing period, residents may notice temporary water discoloration caused by stirred-up debris in the lines. Running faucets for a few minutes should clear the water.
Firefighters will continue flushing each hydrant until the water runs clear and are coordinating with local businesses to minimize disruptions.
“This is a critical process for the fire department,” officials noted. “It allows us to know exactly how much water each hydrant can provide during an emergency, ensuring we’re prepared to protect the citizens of Okmulgee.”
