Backup quarterback Michael Hawkins, Jr. shined in his first start as No. 5 Oklahoma cruised to a 44-0 shutout win over Kent State on Saturday. Filling in for the injured John Mateer, Hawkins threw three touchdowns and rushed for another, leading the Sooners (5-0) to scores on their first five drives. He finished with 162 passing yards and 33 rushing yards.
Isaiah Sategna was a standout on special teams and offense, tallying 75 receiving yards, two touchdown catches and 97 punt return yards – the most by a Sooner since 2012. Tory Blaylock also contributed 78 rushing yards on 15 carries.
The Sooners’ defense dominated, limiting the Golden Flashes (1-4) to just 135 total yards and 17 rushing yards on 33 attempts. OU notched five sacks and 13 tackles for loss. A third-quarter strip sack by R Mason Thomas led to a scoop-and-score by Gracen Halton, marking Oklahoma’s first forced turnover and turnover battle win of the season.
Oklahoma also paid tribute to its past, honoring the 1985 national championship team at halftime and donning vintage throwback uniforms.
The only concern was an injury to receiver Keontez Lewis, who was carted off after a collision with a brick wall. The team later said the outlook was promising following offsite testing.
Now 5-0, the Sooners turn their attention to Saturday’s Red River Rivalry against No. 9 Texas in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on ABC.
