God Is for Me

It was David, “the sweet psalmist of Israel” who said in Psalm 56:9, “When I cry unto Thee, then shall my enemies turn back: this I know, for God is for me.” Any number of things can be or seem to be our enemy – from our human adversaries, our greatest spiritual foe to unwelcome circumstances. We may have been told at sometime that even we are our own worst enemy. Regardless, based on Scripture throughout the Old and New Testaments, we can declare with David, “God is for me,” at every juncture of life.

Another encouraging thought from Scripture that comes to mind is that God is always at work in our world and in our lives individually. Jesus in John 5:17, 19, assures us of this, “My Father worketh (has been working) hitherto (right up to this present time) and I work: for what things soever He (the Son) seeth the Father do…these also doeth the Son.” Henry Blackaby (along with Claude King) in the book, “Experiencing God,” elaborates on these verses in the most powerful and unusual way as he provides example after example of God’s mighty works.

From the song by Karen Peck and New River come these wonderful words for us to remember, “God likes to work when nothing else will.” A myriad of examples from God’s Word floods our minds. When Abraham and Sarah were approaching 90-100 years old and they had not received the promised son, only God could step in and give them Isaac. Then we find God commanding Abraham to sacrifice that precious son as a burnt offering. After three days of bearing this unspeakable burden, Abraham and Isaac arrive at the place of sacrifice. Abraham knew that only “God would (and could) provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering,” in Isaac’s stead. When Moses and the Israelites reached the Red Sea while escaping from Egypt, only God could provide a dry path for them right through the midst of the sea, then destroy their enemies by the same sea.

God’s mighty works do not always bring visible deliverance and safety. It didn’t for Charlie Kirk, and it is very difficult for our finite minds to process that. However, many are convinced that the work of God through Charlie’s life, his wife Erika, Turning Point USA and God’s kingdom influence will be greater in the years ahead than ever before. In the wake of it all, we will remember that, “God’s grace is sufficient,” as we draw upon that grace.

We have a story of the persecution of the disciples in Acts 12 and in Verses 1-2, it is recorded that Herod the king, “Killed James the brother of John with the sword.” The remainder of the chapter tells of the miraculous deliverance of Peter in answer to the unceasing prayer of the church. On the other hand, God spared not His own son, but offered Him up for us that He might take away our sins and one day He will take away the sins of the whole world.

At this point I would like to share with our readers that, in the last few days, I have received a very serious cancer diagnosis with many unanswered questions. However, the bottom line is, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose,” (Romans 8:28). If we are serving
